I ordered a couple of fish from LiveAquaria: an ORA Picasso Clownfish and a Diver's Den Red Head Solon Fairy Wrasse. This was my first time ordering from Diver's Den.

The wrasse arrived this morning with a white spot at the top front of its dorsal fin which I noticed while drip acclimating for my quarantine tank. I sent the attached "aerial" photos to LiveAquaria and called them. Their advice was the continue to acclimate and put BOTH fish in the quarantine tank. I am very concerned about needlessly exposing the clown to both the potential ectoparasite as well as the copper I intend to use to treat this.

Note that when I got the wrasse and unpackaged the plastic bag, I could immediately see it gasping for air at the surface. As soon as I began acclimating, it positioned itself almost motionless at the bottom of the acclimation container, although that could have been from the stress of being transferred.

I have both Cupramine and Paraguard on hand. I was planning on doing 2-3 weeks of Paraguard but, seeing what I'm seeing, I think copper is the way to go. If the fish makes it, it makes it but I don't want to do a half-measure and end up with problems, down the road, in my display tank.

Any thoughts? Ich? Some other kind of ectoparasite?

I'm thinking I might raise the temperature in the quarantine tank to 84 and start them with Cupramine now. I have Copper Power on the way but it won't be here until Friday. So if I start ramping them up with Cupramine, I can continue with the Copper Power. I have an API copper test kit (and plenty of Cuprisorb) on hand.

Edit: Sorry about the double posting at first. I apologize for that!

Per Live Aquaria: "Thank you for your email and for the pictures that you sent. After reviewing the pictures of the Red Head Solon Fairy Wrasse, our Aquatic Specialists have determined that the spot is lymphocystis. As this is caused by a virus, there is not a specific treatment for this condition. We do recommend treating with an antibacterial medication, such as Melafix, to prevent any secondary bacterial infections. Most fish with this condition do make a full recovery. Please keep us updated on the condition of the wrasse. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause."
