Ok so I have been watching cameras for a while now, going on three years, I have been leaning to the nikon side.

I realize I will still spend some money on a macro lens, but to get me started what is the best camera I can get " with a standard every day lens" for between $400-$500?

What is your opinion? (I know opening this up for opinions could be dangerous)

I got a Cannon t1i from Newegg for 550$ after mail in rebate and free shipping right before Christmas and I love it. Just got to keep checking for it to go on sale.

Eagleeyez, I use a Sony Alpha A200. I got it for X-Mas and I love it!It seems really simple to use and navigate the menus. The only downside to the A200 is that it does not have a live view mode so you can't see the shot on the lcd before you snap them you have to put your eye up to the eyepiece to take a picure, you can see it on the lcd after you snap the shot though.I will say though after using it this way I find I like it alot better than the live view mode.JMO

You can get a D40 on eBay new with a lens for around $500. Check around at your local camera shops. I got a super deal on my D200 when I got it.

I got Canon T1i also around Christmas time. Great camera...

If your budget around $ 500, then you might get the Canon XS or XSi.

Not sure about Nikon. I am the Canon guy.......

Check out the Nikon service advisory on the D5000, just in case that is the one you are leaning towards. Especially if you are looking for used...and the chance it may be out of warranty.
