What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Patience
Taking my anger out on a washing machine. Brought the new washing machine out to watch just in case it gets any idea it wants to pi$$ me off and stop working like the other one.

Let er rip brother, that's awesome. Some may not realize how therapeutic shooting can be. I've got a new 7.62 I've been wanting to sight in at 300 yards. They just closed my favorite range, and I don't have that long of a shot on my land.

they also dosed bacteria into every start up tank. you don't need to do that when starting with live ocean rock. I don't think it hurts but it is not needed. that's why you buy the live ocean stuff.
The bottled bac actually works pretty well but what you don't get is all the 'other' stuff that eats other stuff. There is more we don't know about the ocean than we do know. You can be pretty sure that anything that grows in the ocean has something that eats it in the ocean. We've only scratched the surface of what eats what or what out-competes what. Live rock has balance that we can not get from bottles today. It has baddies as well, or at least baddies at the scale of our tanks but we can kill/maim/isolate most of them.

Should I try chemiclean? :thinking-face: my cyano is so bad it accumulates on filter socks with 1200gph split between the three... it's growing on powerheads...
order a snackle box from Dinkins. it's possible you just don't have a big enough population of pods too.

so I ordered replacement filters and an extra resin. You can see my resin needs to be replaced. Do you think I should just change the resin and change the other filters next time? They do not look dirty. that was my plan. I'm getting 0 TDS still. Measured with both the BRS meter and a hand held one. I use the hand held one because the tap water shows around 40 with the hand held meter. The in on the BRS meter says 6 and out says 0. I have been changing it as soon as it hits 1 but will use that water for the humidifiers. I do back flush the line for a few minutes before and after use. I run the system right at 78 PSI.

It's a little more expensive but I like to change everything at the same time.

My reef AB+ is arriving today i also have two other coral foods one is Reef blizzard and for the life of me I can't remember the name of the other. Should I alternate feeding each one or mix them all together and feed at the same time? What would you guys suggest?

Each tank is a different experience, how I do it, I mix all the foods together to do target feeding and the AB+ and phytoplankton I add a different day because it didn't work well for me when I mixed everything with the AB+, instead when I separated it it works for me.

So how do I know if it's working for my tank?

I noticed that the corals were closing a lot, some normally close to eat but it was too much, maybe I'm not explaining myself well, but you'll notice when you feed them if they behave the same or differently.

Wasn’t big but unexpected here. I used to live in CA so know what it’s like but you just don’t expect it here. 6 years ago when it was -20+ for two weeks we kept having frost quakes. Kept hearing big bangs and felt like the house got hit with something.
Glad everything is alright Paul!
I was born/raised in California.
Went through many many quakes.

No.

I'd wait it out rather than chem bomb it. the tank is just new. I had it in my 32 I started with caribsea and sand. the 112 never had cyano but did get diatoms. that was started with live ocean rock but caribsea sand still. a while back someone said to try and use a siphon and just spine the water right into your sump through filter socks. then swap the socks when it gets full. just use clamps to hold the sock and hose in place on the sump since you need to see what you are sucking up in the tank.
Great advice.

I've been doing that, unfortunately it

Comes right back and ny sand beds super clean as far as detritis. I know my nutrient levels aren't super high, or at least 4 or 5 days ago they weren't. Just irritating that it's coming back with such a vengeance and I'm constantly cleaning it off everything. My first tank 8 years ago was live everything and never had a bit of cyano ever :face-with-rolling-eyes: stupid BRS insisting I use dry everything while I was building my tank lol
Check this out Mike....

I'm under the impression that you are okay as long as tds is 0.
Also I base a lot of it on incoming tds.
At 40, it'll last awhile.
Mine is only 10 so I replace filters at 8 months but resin at 1 year.
Either way it's still 0 when I replace it but it makes me feel better. :smiling-face:
