No matter how bad the browns do I will always be a fan. Watching Jim Brown when I was a younger will always be with me, the fight by the city to stick it to Modell when he pirated the team out of town great stuff. Cleveland is a football city. I wish them the best. Ohio State? you mean THE Ohio State, what more needs to be said.

Ya, still and always a Browns fan even though it’s frustrating. I can count on my Buckeyes to bring me up on Saturdays to even out the depression on Sundays.

Low to zero phosphate can bring on Dino’s, that’s why you don’t want it to bottom out without you knowing.

Depends on who you talk to, the types of corals they keep, even there tank management style. 0.34 is not bad BUT if you have a lot of GHA the 'real' value is probably higher. Still, I consider 0.34 to not be an issue.

It seems the two main streams of thought are 0.01-0.03 for people that like low nutrients and almost exclusively SPS and 0.3-1.0 (although this range is really more all over the board) for people that tend toward high nutrients and more of a mix with LPS/Softies.

I personally shoot for somewhere between 0.05-0.25.

Can low cause algae?

This is hard to answer. The quick one is no but it can cause dinos. The longer one is that algae just is. High phosphates provide a fuel source that can help fuel their explosion and low phosphates can limit their growth somewhat.

Algae is a very ancient life form. It is very good at consuming whatever nutrients are available and out competing just about anything else. Algae spores are going to be just about anywhere there isn't something else. High phosphate will give them more fuel to grow more quickly. Low phosphate will impede their growth but they will normally get the phosphate that your corals need before the corals will. In a total lack of free phosphate the algae may start to die, after the corals start to fade but dinos will jump in and take their place. You are much better off with algae.

So how do you eliminate algae? Manually, a good CuC brigade, herbivorous fish and balanced water chemistry.

Once algae takes hold, and algae does not need to be introduced by accident, the stuff just is, nutrient changes will not stop it. You can make it worse by raising nutrients but you could completely stop adding nutrients and there may be some die back but you won't kill it. If it gets really bad some kind of chemical intervention can help you to get it back to a more reasonable level but you will still need CuC/fish and manual labor to conquer it. Then if you keep your nutrients in balance your CuC/fish will keep it in check, not gone but not really visible either.

I appreciate that feedback sir. I used an external on my freshwater planted tank years ago and had nothing but trouble with it, especially after a power outage. Return pump would come on and it was hit or miss if the overflow would return to suction or not.

Yeah, that's unfortunately due to low flow conditions allowing air to fill the top portion of the U tube. I was running an 800 gph pump on a 1750 gph overflow so I had to reprime the tube about once a month or it would slow down considerably causing the tank level to rise. Drilled tanks are definitely better.

I have 2 of them. They are not very bright. I have them at 10% white and 85% blue so it is very blue on my side. Easy to use and seems quite ok but if it is 280usd I would try maybe to find something else.

0.034 is total ballpark for an SPS dominate tank. I wouldn't try to raise or lower them.

Keep taking your meds Tom but his tank is sps free. It contains softies and lps.

Not at all. Mine is higher than .3 let alone .03 and I have coral growth and no algae growth. Each tank is different Cam, but .03 is NOT too high
