I think you'd need to drill your tank or overflow? Refugiums are part of the sump to reduce nitrates by plant absorption. as for stand alone, it would have to be connected to your system to remove nitrates. so not exactly sure of 'stand alone' part
HOB don't require drilling. Hang inside don't either

I didn’t make fun of the shape of his head I said I was going to use him as the figurehead for the bow of the boat! But I’m not responsible for what the shape of his head looks like after the carving!
