Hahah I forgot about this!
I remember watching it as a kid and thinking it was so funny! It works with aggressive fish in our tanks as well, especially if you don’t have a sump.

How are you feeling Tim !
Ah ok. How are you feeling today?
Better. Pain is significantly less but infrequent spasms when I walk and my back is super tight. Using a cane mostly as a leaning post when I need a break or stop to talk to a vendor. Trying not to overdo it today. The ibuprofen is finally working to at least take the edge off the pain.

Morning Tim <tips hat>.
I've been kind of out of the loop the past couple days. You mentioned something about an appointment being moved up. Is this for your back?
Yes. My lower back is not feeling great. I've been using a walker or a cane since Saturday. The closest appointment for my PCP was June 30th. They had a cancellation for Friday late morning and I took it.

@tbrown Its my understanding that you are supposed to set your heater higher than you actually want your tank, then set the inkbird at the temp you want the tank to be which would then make the inkbird turns the heater off and on as needed. Is that not right? That's how I have set up all the inkbirds on all my freshwater tanks over the years.
Yes, that is how you set it up.
I do, and have done, the same. I set the heater a little higher than my parameters I enter into the Ranco controller.
This works, yes, but the other way is letting the heater run as normal and set the Inkbird a half degree or so higher than the heater temperature so that if the heater fails to shut off, the Inkbird kicks in.

To be fair, I have both my Inkbird and Hydros set very similar to the way you run yours but it also causes more fluctuations in temperature than when I had the heaters with no controller.

Both ways work but if you set the heater higher and the Inkbird fails then the heater stays running to the higher temperature setting so you really need to make sure the heater isn't set too high.

As Diana mentioned, use the Inkbird as a failsafe.

I've have no experience with them. I can't say I would trust it overly. The heater is the most likely source of a tank crash, by far.

Personally I would put in a heater from Eheim, or Finnex. I'm using a BRS Titanium heating element (no built in controller) with an Inkbird on my main tank but I'm not comfortable with it so I'm constantly checking it. I use AquaELs on the 40B and the two 5-gallons, and when it is set up a Finnex on the Waterbox 15.

I avoid glass heaters today because it is too easy to accidentally break the tube, but there are several newer ones that you can supposedly run over with your car without breaking. I would avoid off-brand titanium units as not all titanium is of equal quality and I've seen photos of titanium tubes pitting. Most likely they are either poor-quality titanium or titanium-coated.
I have my heater plugged into an Inkbird plugged into my Hydros...

I still believe the old Eheim heaters were the best ever. The only bad thing about them was their size and being a little unsiighty. However, I always ran them in the sumps.
