I’m finally taking the plunge into my dream system — a 1,000-gallon SPS-dominated reef. The plan is to create a setup that will hopefully thrive over the next 10 years with a dedicated fish room handling the filtration, automation, and coral onboarding. I sold all of my maricultures in my 300 to save up for this dream build that will be seeded with aquacultured SPS all starting from small frags.

The whole process of this build has taken nearly 6 months to be up and running. The aquascape alone took 12 hours of yoga inside the tank. It has been built with plenty of room for SPS colonies to grow out while still keeping open water for a big mix of fish. I am running the Moonshiners Method which I hope to have automated in the next few months with monthly ICP tests to make adjustments.

This tank is basically the next step up from my 300-gallon reef, which taught me a lot over the years. The goal here is to take those lessons and scale them into a system that can support over 100 fish and SPS colonies.

Here are some pictures from the initial setup 6 months in. I will do my best to post updates. Hope everyone enjoys the tank.

This is beautiful! Do you plan on doing cabinets or anything in the room? What is the effort required each week to maintain such a large tank? Do you manage pests like Ich or flukes? Or do you QT everything before hand?

Yes, I am having cabinets made as we speak. It's really going to transform the tank. I spend half an hour a day doing general maintenance. Everything is overbuilt and there are quite a few redundancies. I left the tank for two weeks and had no issues another than some snails knocked over some corals. Everything in the system has gone through a rigorous QT.
