40 Gallon Cube stocking recommendation

Hi everybody. I have an Aquatop 40 gallon cube aquarium with about 35 pounds of rock and soft corals. I currently have 2 percula clownfish, 1 royal gramma and 1 lawnmower blenny. I've been thinking of adding another fish or two and was wondering if anyone had a similar aquarium/livestock set up and had ideas. Some fish I've been considering include a yellowtail damsel, banggai cardinal, six line wrasse, yellow coris wrasse and a rainford goby. Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance.

Personally I would not put a damsel in that tank, I added a damsel to my 40 gallon and had to fish it out a few hours later, it was a terror. I've never tried 6-lines but have heard almost nothing but bad stories about them. I would suggest a hectors goby over a rainford goby, I find the coloration better and sharper on the hector.

Bangais as good fish, basslets such as black cap or yellow assessor are good. Chalk bass is good too.

Are your clowfish paired? If so then it may be like my aquatop 40 and they won't let you add anything new.

Hi. Yes, they are paired. But they have allowed other fish to come in and have never bothered any fish except each other. Ironically the one "bully" fish I am most worried about is the royal gramma. It is incredibly angry when new fish are added.

You could add a Pygmy Angel in a 40 gallon for a nice pop of color. Also a Fang Blenny.

Thanks, I was thinking about a Cherub or Pygmy too. Do you think a fang blenny would fight with a lawnmower one?

My Fang Blenny swam-- it was not a bottom dweller-- so I would think you'd be OK.

I have a 45 gallon. On my list of fish I want to add is a longnose hawkfish, mandarin and maybe an dwarf angel, but I'm not sure which one just yet.

My Fang Blenny swam-- it was not a bottom dweller-- so I would think you'd be OK.

"Technically" venomous. Not really a problem... just don't let it nibble on your finger. Lol.

Also, honorable mention for a 40-gallon (and very underrated-- great coloration under lights): Rusty Angel. A hardy dwarf.

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT add the damsel!
I have a 60 gallon cube, and added 2 yellowtails as I heard they were quiet and a local reefer was giving them away. They started off quiet and then got more and more aggressive, and then in a flash killed my royal gramma which was my favourite fish. Needless to say I rehomed them after that. A coris wrasse will get too big so unless you’re planning on upgrading I wouldn’t get one. Bangais are cool, I’ve one and am currently searching for a female so I’ve a pair. To be honest, as your tank ages, I think that having fish with more personality is better than colour.
I’ve a filefish which is awesome. His swimming pattern and inquisitive nature is nice. I’ve also always thought long nose hawk fish are cool. Kinda of just perch all day looking around. Clown gobies would be another good pick.

I don’t have a six line, as I heard they can be hit and miss with aggression, but I have a pink streak wrasse which looks quite similar (maybe a bit smaller) which is cool. It kind of just hovers around all day with an orange rim to its eyes exploring the rock work.
Invertebrates like a coral banded shrimp or cleaner shrimp are also a great addition.

If you can find one, a mandarin dragonet on prepared foods would also be an awesome addition!
