I currently have 2 small clownfish, 1 cleaner shrimp and a couple of snails and hermit crabs in a 40 gallon tank. I would like to slowly add more fish and would like to know people’s thoughts and opinions on this list. Do they occupy different areas of the tank? How would they interact?
Green clown goby

Helfrichi Firefish

Blue dot jaw fish

Red or green Mandarin goby

Spotted mandarin goby (Synchiropus picturatus)

Crocea Clam (maybe maxima clam)

I would just get one mandarin and get it last. Unless you have a big sump I don’t think you would have enough pods to support two.

You can’t have blue spotted jawfish in warm water, they have to be in cold water to thrive. If you want a jawfish get a pearly jawfish.

They all occupy the lower area of the tank but they should all get along.

Get the clam when its older, when they’re babies( under 4”) they rarely make it. You also have to make sure you have the proper par.

With the mandarin you will need a lot of pods. Probably have to dose and culture your own pods to sustain one. As said above, blue spot jawfish are coldwater fish

I know that they are common, but a Royal Gramma is always a solid choice and probably wouldn't share the same space in your aquarium with some of the other fish you have listed.

Green clown goby - tough to get eating

Helfrichi Firefish - way too expensive

Blue dot jaw fish - he be moving sand

Red or green Mandarin goby - needs lots of pods

Spotted mandarin goby (Synchiropus picturatus) - needs lots of ponds.

Crocea Clam (maybe maxima clam) - I don;t know anything about clams.

All the Royal Gramma's I have ever owned were jerks and ich propagators through stress, drama queen, ridiculousness.

If I have my tank at 75-76 is that ok for the jawfish? Also do you have any recommendations for lights/lighting for the clams? How does one go about culturing pods, would a refugium be recommended? I do not have a sump so it might have to be hang on the back?

Would this be in addition to the others? I think these fish are interesting.

For lighting if you have some money to blow you could do one or two ai primes. If you want to go cheaper, smatfarm and some nicrew lights affer great bang for your buck

That’s too hot for the jaw fish, the water needs to be at least below 72-73 degrees. but below 70s is best.

Culturing pods is a whole thing so I would just look up.

If you don’t have a refugium and don’t have a culture I wouldn’t pass on the mandarin. You can try a hob fuge, but unless it’s really big I don’t think it will be able to support the mandarin.
