Some of the rules I have always broken are never QTing, no testing, using ocean rock, allowing "pests" to live happily in coexistence with my reef, no dosing, no chemicals besides prime, no filtration additives besides carbon about once every few months to clear the water, and others I am sure.

My general philosophy in reefing has always been to create as natural an ecosystem as possible. I see the tank as the ocean, the refugium as the estuary, and the skimmer as the beach. I allow all life to live and thrive in my tank in order to fill its natural niche in my tank. I believe even things such as red planaria play a vital role in my system. By allowing everything to thrive in my tank just one thing will never take it over. Checks and balances.
Beautiful! I'm a brand new reefer, so I don't know anything from experience, but I love your tank and your philosophy on reef aquariums! The aquascape looks so natural, like Mother Nature built it. I hope to be able to replicate that attitude and approach to my own little piece of the ocean. As low tech as possible; a small coral reef ecosystem existing in harmony with little interference from me.

I've been in the hobby for years and have the same philosophy. I use natural live ocean rock from Indonesia, strongly believe in supporting as close to a natural microbiome as possible, dont QT, etc. I'll probably never change my philosophy on starting and maintaining a tank as close to naturally as possible!

I currently have man-made rock in my tank, but I plan to add some aquacultured live rock from the Gulf of Mexico. Some people don't do that because of the hitchhikers, but I'm actually looking forward to the experience and want the biodiversity.

Personally, the only critters I prefer to remove are crabs but only because of the particular fish I keep.

The easiest way to accomplish this is by starting your tank with real ocean liverock!!! Good luck.

Couple of tank updates..

(1) I think i have some type of mushroom coral disease as most of my mushrooms have been affected and dying. Other corals are fine. Sad.

(2) a couple of new fish have been added. I got a sweet new flame angel (traded in my coral beauty) and a silver belly wrasse.

(3) my green clown goby now lives in my overflow and I cannot catch it lol!

(4) added a couple of rock flower anemones and scored a coral i always wanted, a Japanese wada nepthea!

Hey, I love your tank! I remember you saying you kept a one-spot Foxface in your 65g; how was he? I recall you saying that having less bio-load and more live rock is better. Thanks!

Yes did keep a fox face but he didn't make it.

As a general rule I'd say less fish and more rocks is a pretty good place to start but overtime your tank will "tell you" how many fish it can handle. Fish personality is just as important as bioload, something to remember.
