Hello,

I’m pretty much wrapping up my battle with dinos. My nutrients are still on the higher side, so it seems like I’m dealing with high-nutrient dinos rather than the low-nutrient type.

Current parameters:
  • Nitrate: 24 ppm
  • Phosphate: 0.13–0.15 ppm

Would adding more bio-media be a good option to help increase biological filtration, or could that potentially cause the dinos to return? I definitely don’t want the dinos coming back, but at this point it seems like I’m dealing more with green hair algae than dinos.

I’m thinking additional bio-media, along with a stronger clean-up crew, might help balance things out.

Could work, be sure that the bio media does not contain any silicates or the dinos will reignite again, usually they go away on their own when the silicates are used up and the bacteria diversity has been properly established. The hair algae needs to be brushed off and removed from the tank, a stronger cleanup crew will help with keeping it back after your manual removal of it.

Also in my opinion those parameters are great unless you plan on keeping harder sps corals but you could still keep a few acropora species like green slimer, berdsnest and montis with that nutrient (speakibg out of experience because i keep abit lower nitrate than you do but i do have between 0.15-0.23 in phosphate)

Thanks I might not actually go this route as I've seen threads where adding more bio media doesn't necessarily reduce nitrates and phosphates.

That nutrient level don’t look too bad. May be worth brining on nitrates a bit I wouldn’t go out of my way to do so. If you don’t have any or much biomedia in the sump that is a low risk way to increase surface area for bacteria and provide even more habitat for copepods and other critters. My biomedia mostly consists of Seachem Matrix which I rinse and put into small mesh pouches in the sump. If my nitrates go to low you can remove biomedia to get towards the level you want.

The bio media is not really there for phosphate and nitrate controle but more surface are for bacteria to populate which directly competes with dinos etc
