Hello R2R community! I previously had one going on another site (which I still adore), but I've found myself spending more time here. So as a long time R2R lurker, I have decided to officially make the move to settle in over here with a build thread. That being said, my first few posts in the thread are to catch this build up with what I've encountered so far.

In a nut shell I had an established Fusion 40 tank since 02/26/17. The tank had its shares of ups and downs, from corals flourishing to the point of literally giving away frags to local reefers, as well as having healthy corals die without so much as a reason why. The original tank has lived through its single AI Hydra 52 light just suddenly die after years of faithful service, followed by my sheer panic of omg, my corals will all die now without an immediate light replacement, I can't believe I now have to drop hundreds on a new light (I ended up with a Radion XR30w G4 Pro due to a luckily placed sale the same week). I even upgraded the Fusion 40's return pump to the MightyJet 538 when it became all the rage, because reasons. And then there's the infamous, aggressive bout of algae in early 2021 that took almost a year to bounce back from. Good grief Charlie Brown is an understatement . And after finally having come back from the edge of insanity with that algae attack, I had begun to discover the world of NSA aquascaping- and I fell in love. I had never been a fan of my original pile-of-rock aquascape, but at the time the only other alternative I was aware of was complex rigging with acrylic rods and mortar- nothing I honestly wanted to deal with at the time. But watching people make these amazing, personalized sculptures with such a simple process...well....the desire to do the same finally became too much. And with the encouragement of my wife and a local reefer, the decision to move forward with the idea became reality.

I ended up purchasing some of the 'foundation' reef saver rock from BRS so that I could make sure this time around that my rocks had a nice, flat foundation on the glass bottom instead of jagged edges on top of sand. With those pieces as my foundation (no pun intended) I went ahead and started breaking up some left over dry rock I had from my previous build, and went to town in my garage with a bottle of thin BRS super glue . And I have to say, what an absolute blast it was creating my own personalized scape. I must've built and tore down thirty different 'ideas' until taking the official plunge and ultimately landing on my final product.

Build FTS.jpg

Build Top.jpg

Not exactly NSA (I may have went a bit overboard with the foundation rock), but I definitely found it more pleasant shape to look at than the pile of of rocks I had before- think of the coral placement possibilities! And lets be honest, its just fun to tell people who see the tank, "See that? Yeah, I sculpted that."

I then began the process of curing the now sculpted dry rock in a plastic brute bin, using Dr.Tim's One and Only (his brand of ammonia). The process took just over a 45 days to complete appropriately, and I gave it another two weeks of consistency before finally committing it to the tank. I then removed the frags, fish, and inverts I had currently in the display tank into a quarantine tank I had setup, along with some of the live rock from the display tank. Once the livestock was safely transferred to the temporary tank, I drained the display tank and removed the current sandbed entirely. I then quickly added my new rockscape so it sat flat on the glass bottom, added about 20lbs of reef grade dry sand (which I had previously rinsed for a few hours and had let dry), and filled the tank with thirty-two gallons of saltwater I had already made that morning (and had left circulating at temp for just this moment).

FTS Top.jpg

I then allowed the tank to settle and make sure its parameters matched that of the previous tank, and eventually moved my livestock back over when it was good to do so. And with that, the evolution was complete. Whew. I naturally checked my parameters constantly for the first few weeks, making sure there were no mini-cycle issues but everything thankfully continued to stay on track, and none of my livestock showed any signs of distress. Here is the tank on 08/28/22 (almost three months after cycling when I added the corals):

And here are just some fun pictures of my PomPoms

On 09/24/22 I picked up a bunch of new coral. I grabbed a kryptonite candy cane frag from my LFS, which I’ve been looking everywhere for a frag of (that didn’t cost an arm and a leg per head) and was ecstatic to find it. And then I grabbed the rest from a semi local reefer who always has awesome frags available. I grabbed mostly SPS frags plus a nice frogspawn with purple tips. Hopefully I can get these growing out nicely!

And I'd be remiss if I didn't show off the awesome painting my wife got me on our latest trip to Disney world!

52386432735_e52f474296_w.jpg

And so now here we are. The tank has been up and running for a bit now and has really hit the ground running. My goal is to pick up a few more fish, specifically I would ultimately like to end up with a pair of clowns, a pajama cardinal, and a royal gramma (some of my favorite fish). The plan is to at least try and pick up the clowns sometime next month or so after I gather some supplies to follow BRS' 80/20 quarantine procedure. I've never quarantined fished in the past, but after loosing my clown last year (which I had had for 3 years) after adding a new fish (both of which died within 2 weeks of the addition), I decided I'm going to start quarantining my fish from now on. I know its not foolproof, but its better than the game of Russian roulette I've always played.

As far as coral stocking, I would like to have a mixed reef with some hearty SPS across the front and back. But all good things in time.

*takes a deep breath* Whew. And that is the meat and potatoes of what has been happening with my tank and I look forward to the future!

Thank you! I usually feed frozen mysis (Hikari) every other day to my LPS and fish, and so I’ll squirt some at the Pom Poms too and they grab it right up :winking-face: Other than that I’m sure they just scavenge what’s left over from other feedings, but that’s the only ‘spot feeding’ I do with them as they’ve claimed their little areas.

And congrats, what livestock did you add?

Thank you, I might get pom pom crab with my next purchase or porcelain crab, I will need to make sure either will be good for my aquarium. SEP last year I had two clown fish, since then and over the year until now, 4 firefish, 2 chromis, spotted mandarin, high fin goby, pistol shrimp, fire shrimp, skunk/cleaner shrimp, strawberry lipped conch, Halloween hermit, electric blue hermits, red legged blue legged hermits, dwarf, various snails, GSP, firework clove polyp, Kenya tree, rhodactis mushroom, 2 X bounce mushroom, lava mushroom, unidentified mushroom, tuxedo urchin, 2x candy cane, sun coral and a sand sifting starfish :)
Its a 45g 200litre aquarium and I think I'm very close to finishing adding any more apart from more cuc and maybe a crab, it's all really low maintenance for me and it's working out brilliant with my hours I'm at work/home

I can’t speak to a porcelain crab, but I love watching my PomPoms when they’re out :)

Wow, that’s a pretty decently stocked tank. Four fire fish must be cool to watch zipping through the tank, I was always partial to them but every one I’ve gotten in the past has managed to carpet surf despite a top to my tank. And wow, I’ve always wanted a mandarin, would love to see a picture of yours.

Great looking tank, Candy canes are my second favorite corals :) And for whatever reason, I’ve never been able to keep mushrooms, they just never thrive in my tank

Similar thoughts, I really like mushrooms which seem to do well in my aquriam (I think) but it's only been one year so I'm still new

So I recently learned a very valuable lesson- regularly calibrate your probes :face-with-rolling-eyes:

So last week I noticed that my pH was having unusual swings that just didn't seem right. Normally the tank's probe readings sit at 8.15 to 8.3 throughout the day, but lately it started giving me readings that were drastically lower. So knowing that I have not calibrated my probe for an embarrassingly long time (easily two or three years) I picked up some calibration solution and a salifert pH kit to double check my results.

I first tested the current probe with the two solutions and the readings were drastically off :expressionless-face: So I went ahead and calibrated the probes as best as I could. I floated the solution bags in the water for twenty minutes, calibrated with the bags still in my tank water, and waited until the numbers settled completely. Once completed I tested the probe in new solution packets (both acclimated to the tank water as well) and got spot on readings for the 10pH solution and pretty darn close to the 7pH solution, so I know that if the solutions are accurate, then so are my readings.

I then let the tank settle and checked back thirty minutes later to find my pH reading 7.8pH (early morning reading). I double checked this with my salifert kit, which got the same result. After letting the tank do its thing for a day or two, turns out my tank was actually running at 7.8 to 8.0 naturally this entire time :upside-down-face: I know I shouldn't chase pH, and I know the tank can grow coral at that measurement (the previous version of the tank was very successful in the past), but I decided to try a CO2 scrubber to see if it would help.

So I ordered the basic one from BRS with some Icecap media, and set it up a few days ago. So far its been keeping the tank at 8.0 to 8.15, which is a great result. We'll see how long a single canister of media lasts to see if this is something I can keep going long term. Its times like this I do wish I had a sump for a refugium, but it is what it is.

Anywho, here's a quick photo I snapped of the tank the other night after moving the racks up a little higher :)

Yes it's an easy maintenance first aquarium for me, nothing really to stress me out :)
I've had a great success rate so far and have only lost 3 fish and my easy corals are adding colour and growing without worrying about feeding schedule or constant monitoring, I enjoy my aquarium and can not wait to start my next :)
Yours is looking great by the way 'thumbs up'

I’m coming up on two weeks with the C02 scrubber still chugging along on it’s first canister of media. At this rate it’s worth the couple bucks a month in media to keep the tank at 8.1 vs 7.8.

In other news, I’m starting to see the new growth of my SPS corals coming in at a very pale/pastel color in contrast to the rest of their body (bright old growth). I believe it’s a result of my bottomed out nutrients, which despite my daily feedings are measuring 0 for Nitrate and Phosphate.

After some research I’ve decided to try dosing for both. Specifically I’m going to start dosing Nitrates using food grade Sodium Nitrate (mixing a solution using the recommend plantedtank calculator). I’ll have to keep an eye on how it effects my Alk, given I specifically dose Alkalinity currently.

I’m also on the fence about dosing Phosphate using LoudWolf’s Sodium Phosphate Dibasic or their Monobasic, or using Brightwell’s NeoPhos. If anyone’s used either of these I’d love to hear how you liked them.

Anywho, that’s it for now. Otherwise all SPS is showing new growth and my LPS are fat and happy (probably because they get directly fed lol).

Thanks for the welcome. I’ll definitely try a half dose first as a precaution, so thanks for thr warning. Did you find that the Sodium Nitrate had any significant effect on your Alk?

So I decided today would be Nitrate dosing day lol. I tested the tank for Nitrates with my Hannah HR kit and measured 0.0. I went ahead and mixed up some food grade sodium nitrate for the first time and dosed 7ml, which should have raised the tank to 2.27ppm. I waited about twelve hours and tested again, and my result was 0.0. Seems like the nitrates were consumed within the twelve hour window, so I went ahead and dosed another 7ml. We’ll see how this goes

So after getting home from work today and seeing the tank with the lights on, it’s now covered in a brown algae. It’s almost as if I flipped a switch between clean rock/sand bed to brown algae over everything :expressionless-face: I’m not sure if it’s Dinos or Diatoms, (I always confuse the two) but it’s brown, extremely easy to brush off with a toothbrush, and has captured air bubbles. Clearly whatever this was, was awaiting the day I fed it Nitrates lol.

I did a test for Nitrates just now and it shows a result of 0.7ppm. With this sudden algae outbreak, I’m not sure if I should continue to dose up to my original plan of 2-5ppm, or hold off for a bit.
