I’ll keep this build thread short and sweet. I currently live in a 50 gallon mixed reef lagoon system.
70188666065__51014300-14D2-44BD-8D1B-10E9E9A7B0B6.jpeg

this system is about six years old and my sand has completely ticked me off which has cause neglect which has in turn caused it to all turn to limestone due to my dosing schedule. SO…. I have elected to break this 50 down and move on to the next step in my fish tank evolutionary journey, a 20 gallon AIO Nano with dry rock and bare bottom. I’m over the sand life. I want to add flow where I want without restrictions. I’m over the sump life and reaching over pipes to change filter floss and media. I’m over garbage cans full of water and buckets and hoses. Pretty much, I want a five gallon Homer bucket and one 1/4 inch hose to comprise my water change kit.

One BRS Black Friday order, one Wayfair fish tank stand and $900 later here we are. EZPZ reef tank life. NOW…. I understand this will most likely be the most difficult skill level tank I’ve ran due to the complexity of the bare bottom lifestyle, but that’s alright because like everyone else on this forum, I’m the best reefer ever. This again will be a mixed reef. Here’s a list of the equipment.

IM Nuvo20
AI Prime
IM Mighty Jet 300gph DC pump
Nero 3
Apex Jr
Apex Dos running my ATO with half saturated Kalk on head 1 (400mL per day)
Alkalinity only on head 2 (10mL per day)
Media basket on one side / Sock on the other

And that’s all she wrote. Those dosing amounts are complete guesses by the way that’s kind of what I’m predicting. I run that same setup on my 50 dosing wise and it works like a dream.

CYCLE

So here is where it gets interesting. I cut a bio brick in half and threw it in one of the rear chambers. I threw three additional bio blocks in the other side. All of these are dry. The display area holds approximately 15 pounds of Caribsea Life Rock. I dose 15mL of microbacter and purple helix everyday. I ghost feed once each day. I’m three weeks in and my ammonia is steady zero. Green chromis went in a few days ago and I just kicked on the lights to start growing the diatoms. Pods will be added one week from today (So four weeks into the cycle). I fully expect an extended ugly phase due to this lack of sand and negative space aquascape but that’s how it goes. If anyone is interested in the cycle on this tank just check back here as I will be adding some photos weekly since things should start getting interesting now that the lights are on. Here’s a few final photos of the setup.

Love it. Simplicity is under rated.
The IM 20 is one of my favorite tanks. Great stand.
Did you move everything over?
Not going to move anything for a few months. I have like fifteen bubble tips and frags ready to go for testers before I move my expensive stuff. I’m going to let it run and got though the ugly phase to get some diversity before I go introducing the heavy hitter inverts and fish.

I lied. I saw an opportunity to move my Colorado Sunburst over to the new tank. All parameters look fine and he went walking in the big tank so I popped him off. I began Kalk dosing last week too. 1/4 saturation for now until I get some stock up in the tank.

8.1 pH
11 DKH
440 calc
5 nitrate
2 phos

So yea we’re cookin over here. I added some small tester frags of zoas and they’re thriving so I figured why not since I had the opportunity. Here’s some photos. I also found that my old 3 gallon jug of protein fit perfectly in my sump for an ATO/Kalk reservoir. According to my math it should give me two full weeks of top off so that’s even less work I gotta do. And it’s hilarious that I’m dosing Whey for the homies. These corals are gonna be throwing up front double poses for my company in a few months time.

Howdy yall! Quick update at just shy of the two month mark!! I broke down the 50 gallon lagoon yesterday and I’m in the process of finding a new home for it! What a fricken task though my god. Took a full days work to get it fully unloaded and pulled outside. Good news is I traded some of my rarer stuff to a local coral farmer who appreciated it. Got me a few new torches and he fragged my Gonis for me which were pretty much all I cared about. Between the new stuff and some frags I pulled out of the 50 a month ago the tank is already filling up. SO MUCH faster than I had planned but hell so far the parameters are as stable as can be so why not go for it.

pH pegged at 8.1 (For some reason no nightly swings)
DKH 10.5
Calc 450
Nitrate 8
Phos .02

Routine is as follows:

Bi weekly 2 gallon water changes (4 Gallons total per week)
600 mL daily top off with 1/2 saturated Kalkwasser
9 hour light cycle with a 4 1/2 hour ramp time both ways
2x AI Prime Royal blue/blue/violet at 50%
UV at 45% - Green at 15% - White at 10%

So far no algae no pests at all. Just good times…… For now…. Here’s updated photos. Oh and don’t hate on my dosing line hanging in the tank. I’m waiting on a little 3D printed hose clamp from Etsy which is apparently coming from Vietnam or something it’s been weeks. Anyways enjoy.

looks good, but you are changing out 4 gallons total every week? Seems like overkill for such a small bioload. I have the same tank with a 2.5 gallon ATO setup, and am doing a 20% water change every 2 weeks, but that's it.

Do you have a bare bottom and negative space aquascape in yours or are you running sand? I agree that four gallons per week is a bit overkill but considering how new the tank is and the lack of a strong biome at this point, a few extra gallons per week is necessary to avoid any algae issues.

Here’s another update for y’all bout 2 1/2 months in. Everything is status quo. I had to take apart the Mighty Jet and clean it out as it was crapping out daily. Giving me E5 on the controller. So we’re good to go there. I have to say this tank is dead silent. Zero noise whatsoever which is really nice. Parameters all staying stable right where we want them and the corals and fish are all doing 10/10. My tester acro which was pretty much completely bleached before I added it has healed up nicely and is coloring up with full polyp extension. Still staying committed to my water changes and so far it seems to be the recipe for a tank like this. I’ve continued to up my feeding for the corals and I haven’t noticed any change in algae build up. Kalkwasser continues at half saturation 650 mL daily.

Looks good. I'm always amazed how nice some of the members smaller tanks can be.
Great setup, congrats.

it's looking good, keep us posted. I can't wait to see how it fills out. Are you going to let Coralline grow on the bottom? I imagine it'll be hard to keep it clean, like the sides of the tank.

Yea these colorado sunbursts are worth every penny!
Yeah those are some super wicked anemones. I just found a black widow from someone selling their set up so basically paid for the anemone and got the 25g rimless and all the equipment free. lol

Probably going to scrape it off until I get sick of doing it. I know myself at this point
