My initial thought was to create a mesh lid with one of them aluminum window frame kits that are available at HD hardware, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea given that salt my end up corroding it and crashing my tank.

Is there a paint/aerosol spray that I can use that is 100% reef safe? I was thinking to spray the aluminum frame, so it's protected from salt.

I made a lid with aluminum window screen frame and standard screen mesh. No issues aside from my lack of skills making the mesh too tight which bowed the longer sides in a bit.

I'm going to build mine out of the same material, going to paint it black with Krylon fusion spray paint.

That's basically what all the "custom lid kits" are anyways, probably the same extrusion manufacturer for both the "aquarium specific" and standard window kits.
