I had put my clown in an emergency QT. Water not cycled or anything. Don't have filter media to put into the QT. I do have a bottle of IO Biospira and I've been putting that into the QT. I'm dosing prime as well and will be doing water changes daily. I read @Brew12 's article about ammonia control but have some additional questions/concerns.

I'm medicating with Furan-2, I think my clown has some type of bacterial gill disease. He is breathing heavily and sitting/lying at the bottom of the tank. Skin and color look of the fish look fine. On the back, it says "antibiotic medication may inhibit the biological filter"...this means that the furan-2 likely negates the biospira right? How do i make sure my clown doesn't die/get worse from him being in the QT (from high ammonia levels)?

This is my first-time emergency QT, any and all tips are appreciated. Let's hope my clownfish survives!!

Are you running an ammonia badge? If so what color is it?

FYI I am a huge fan of IO biospira. You do need some sort of media in your tank/hob for the bacteria to propogate upon. I use products all the time in QTs that contain nitrofurazone (Furan-2) and it has little to no impact on the biofilter. NFG is another story.

The Seachem ammonia alert badge is a great tool to have.

+1 on this. You need something like a sponge with water flow through it for the nitrifying bacteria to grow on.

Have you done a FW dip to check for flukes?

Yes, I did a FW dip last night for flukes. nothing came out. i checked on him as soon as i woke up this morning and he looks way worse than last night. not moving from his side and very pale. i think hes definitely on his way out

Looks like he is having a hard time breathing.
Perhaps a 30 min methylene blue bath?

Will help with hemoglobin production and has antiseptic properties and is rather mild on an already stressed fish.

Agree it doesnt look good. I have had fish return to full health when ive done dumb things that stress them out and started breathing heavily on the tank floor, but not when its an infection.

Could try walmart, sometimes they keep basic fish treatments on hand. Also the big box pet stores if near petco, pet supplies plus, pet smart. Sure if you called someone would be able to check the shelfs for you :)

:(

Try to minimize stress, no lights, if worried about ammonia maybe a water change.

Lights off only ambient room lighting. Lower the temp just slightly. Lower the salinity just slightly. Increase O2 with additional bubbler or powerhead aimed up at the surface so it's actively rippling the water surface.

Good job. I know it's tough but some times all you can do is your best and then wait. You've done more than many people would and I commend you for it. Hopefully the little guy recovers!

Oh, man. Sorry for your loss. Sometimes we get fish that have suffered incredible internal injuries or that are harboring disease that we cannot see until it's too late. You did a great job trying to help the little guy.
