Majestics are one of the better options for mixed reef when it comes to large angels. It helps to keep them very well fed. As always, there are no guarantees but speaking from experience

How hard is it to catch an angel in a large reef?
I can’t say this enough: Easy… so long as you use a trap. I built mine, but you can buy them. Mine is an acrylic cube with a string attached to one of the end walls that slides down once the fish is in.

Lemonpeels are really nice, thats a bummer.

I’ve had good luck over the years with turning on the lights at night They’ll be blinded and disoriented for a few seconds.

I have always wanted a Majestic or a Regal angel. My LFS had a beautiful and healthy Majestic Angel in stock today.

My problem is I also really like torches and have put a lot of money in torches in my tank.

Who has successfully (or unsuccessfully) tried to keep a Majestic or Regal Angel in a reef tank with lots of coral? If there are enough successes I may just go back and buy it...
I have 2 angles in my tank and not minutes problem out of them

i cant think

I just added a lemon peel to my tank. My SPS polyp extension has been zero since and I’ve actively seen it nip the corals. Hasn’t touched any LPS or Zoas…. Bummer. PE at night is fantastic on my sticks while the angel is sleeping in the rocks
If the PE is great at night, your angel isn’t doing actual damage.
Instead she’s irritating the SPS for the slime that is excreted. I have my 4 angels and a coralivorous butterfly (plus my YLN Butterfly) with Acros and whilst the PE isn’t great in the day, they’re loving it at night.

Lemonpeels are really nice, thats a bummer.

It depends on the size of the tank, many of the large angels are easier to catch (Pomacanthus and Pygoplites are incredibly easy I find). However, the Dwarf angels (Centropyge, Paracentropyge) are a nightmare as they use every cave they know of in the rocks to appear in a different area of the tank).

Alright I caved and bought a Maldives Regal Angel. I decided I'll just have to keep coral it won't eat. Torches and SPS are the 2 things i really hope it doesnt eat. I have a massive open brain coral too but we will see I guess. Ill remove the brain if I have too

IME, most angels ignore torches just due to their sting. SPS is one of those they may irritate them to get the slime but if there’s PE at night, it’s not an issue.

I have a 400 gallon tank and before I had to tear it down and restart, I had 5 angelfish (emperor, blueface, majestic, scribbled, and personifier). All did not bother my various LPS and several RBTA I had. The key, for me, was I fed a mixture of different food 4 times a day. (keep them active and locating food, detracts from the corals, or at least that was my logic) haha. I also have an ozone reactor and a really good skimmer so it helps with making sure the water quality stays clean.

I do plan on having an emperor, blueface, and majestic again when the time is right. :)

It's a simple matter of choice and a little luck. Fish is my priority. Regal is jewel in the tank! Mine eats zoas only
1000018807.jpg

He's not just bright and striped, he has an incredible charm.
Mulsky, two questions:

1. What other angels you have besides the Regal and Flagfin which I see it the pic? I have tried the Regal several times, full QT etc, and they still don't last in my tank more than a month. Just curious. Clearly, luck is not on my side when it comes to a Regal angel. :P

2. How hardy is the flagfin? Would it fair well with an emperor, majestic, and blueface angels?

Thanks

I have three angels there: flagfin, regal and majestic. And two centropygs in another tank.
All three are peaceful and even sleep in the same cave. )
I think the reason for 90% of failures is in already depleted health of WC fish by the time they come us. I couldn't just walk past when I saw mine in LFS first time. He looked magnificent, was fat, and eating well right there in the store's QT, which is very rare. It was love at first sight, and I took him despite the much higher price than in other Lfs. In my tank, he caught velvet and didn't eat anything for three weeks while undergoing copper treatment. Regals go on a hunger strike for any reason, whether it's illness or stress. If it weren't for his good health reserves, he wouldn't have survived, but in the end, everything turned out well.
Regarding Flagfins, they quite hardy and much simpler by character than Regals and majestics. They are curious, sociable eat everything and make contact immediately.
I think better if regal was bigger than others in size.

Thanks for the reply. I might add a flagfin onto my list. I really like to try a regal again but i have to get over the expensive price tag. 😭

Mulsky, since I have no experience with flagfins, how should it be introduced with my flock of angelfish (emperor, blueface, majestic, flame) I plan on stocking to my 400 gallon tank?

I know it is in the Pomacanthidae family, and know it is less aggressive than an emperor. I'd love to add all at the same time, but my budget doesn't allow that. :)

thanks

I had a blue face angel for 5 years or so that was spectacular. Didn’t mess with my acros, but euphillyia and acans were impossible for me to keep. They like zoas too

Family the same, but genus is different. That might help a bit, but no one knows, because every fish is individual.
