How does one go about pairing butterflyfish or do just a few try ? How possible is it in an aquarium . If any have, was there any tips to enable a pairing ? Was it trial and error , or maybe starting from a group and letting them pair on their own ?

I kept a heniochus acuminatus together with a raccoon butterflyfish. I first let the heniochus establish itself in the tank. And introduced the raccoon after 3 weeks. Had some chasing in the first 2 weeks, but things settled down with enough feeding and some rock rearrangement. Have been happily living together for 4 year now :)

I think it comes to giving them enough space to swim and stay out of each others way. Also keeping them well fed helped them to get along

Space is one key factor in spawning. Some of our animals need more height.

Well fed is another factor. Healthy fish spawn. More frequent but small portions are better than a single or two spread out.

Oh I think I answered the wrong question 😅 I thought the question was asking about the most successful way of having 2 types of butterflyfish in the tank. I have no experience and not enough knowledge to give my opinion on actually pairing and breeding a couple… my bad 😅

You are fine - I know in my case I just hit reply assuming the interest/question was asked in pairing for spawning. 100% me jumping in :D Sorry about that.

. I have 3 juvenile black backed C. Melannotus and two white collar, red tailed Pakistani butterflyfish . The are all in QT . There doesn’t seem to be much interaction between the different species . The Melannotus are very nippy toward each other . The dominant Pakistanni is nippy only when food is placed in the tank . I feed clam on half shell . Bloodworms, super veggie pellets , omega veggie flakes and thawed shrimp, cod , salmon . I also have live littleneck clams to try . I need to acquire white worm culture . And I have started an aptasia grow out tank . So QT first and first feedings going on . Only one pakistanni is not eating yet . All others actively eat . I may have to move the Pakistan i to the aptasia tank

No need to apologize all information is relevant . Yes I do want to pair up for spawning . But I also am mixing different species in DT .
