Extremely stupid question...I'm the definition of a noob when it comes to Apex. I'm just now hooking up my Jr. Everything went smooth as butter BUT!.... Its telling me my water is 86.8 degrees!! what the heck! It's a brand new tank with new heater. Can this be right? Or do I need to calibrate some how?. I haven't had any die off of coral. I moved everything over to the new tank about 2 weeks ago. What should I do? Thanks guys!

I'm pretty sure calibration mean using different means of getting the temperature and averaging it out.

Calibrating is easy. All you have to do is test the temp of the water with a thermometer then go in to the options and set it as the current temp.

In order for calibrating the temp probe to be of any real value, you need a highly accurate and sensitive thermometer to compare the probe reading to. Finding the perfect thermometer can be surprisingly difficult. Many 'lab-grade' thermometers that are commonly available are only moderately accurate. I wound up using this incubator thermometer, which is highly accurate within a limited range that perfectly fits our hobby. It's true you have to convert C to F if you live in the US, but this is a minor inconvenience, esp since the need for calibrating the temp probe is typically a rare event; the temp probe generally holds its calibration much better than the other probes.

You dont need to be dead accurate, if you are withen a degree you are fine. Stability is more important then accuracy, just like all other parameters reducing the swing is the most important thing.

My apex temp probes that I got with the unit were always correct out of the box, but I always double checked them.

Heaters on the other hand, I've never had a single one where the temp on the dial matched the temp they brought the tank to.

Absolutely right. However, even though you don't need to be dead accurate, some of us still want to be. ;Peeking
