Hello All,

im new to posting here on R2R but have been lurking for some time, ive owned an aqua japan gallon aio for almost 2 years and have definitely learnt a lot from the insane amount of mistakes i made with that tank. With that being said i pulled the trigger on a new red sea reefer 170 rimless which i received just about 3 days ago. In total excitement i forgot to take a photo of the box and packaging as it was delivered and proceeded to getting the cabinet built. As it stands right now the cabinet is built and the tank is on the stand.

Here is a photo of the tank that the red sea will be replacing, the awesome stickers and paper garlands were done by my daughter (shes very artsy). this tank was drained and moved to this spot in my place so i could move the red sea into the spot i want it. This area isnt fully level but i really don't have a choice with the space constraints in my living room to move it anywhere else, hopefully it doesn't do any damage while its there for a couple months.

Onto the red sea!

The cabinet is built and the tank is on the cabinet, with the order i picked up the smallest red sea skimmer, im pretty sure its overkill but it has that cool matching factor which i couldn't turn away from not to mention, im planning a fairly heavy bio load for this tank. In this same order i picked up some carib sea shaped rock (all arches) and mocked up the aqua scape im going for, constructive criticism is highly appreciated when it comes to this.

The structure itself is stable but i think im going to use some reef cement or superglue gel to make sure it stays up right.

List of planned equipment for this build:
Current usa DC controllable return pump (on the fence about this one, any input or recommendations would be appreciated, I only want DC though)
Icecap Gyre 3k circulation pump
BRS Carbon and GFO Reactor *plumbed on return manifold*
Aqua Ultraviolet 15w UV Sterilizer *plumbed on return manifold*
Bubble Magus Bmt11 3 head dosing pump (also considering 3 kamoer single wifi dosing pumps, recommendations would be appreciated, this is going to be an sps dominant tank)
Ecotech Radion XR30W light fixture with RMS mounting arm (do i really need the pro??)
ViaAqua 100w heater with temp controller
IceCap ATO (transfer from the old system)

At this point my next steps will be to plumb the return manifold, ive never plumbed anything with PVC so any tips on this are welcome, especially with how to get a 3/4 inch standard return tube down to the push lock fittings that are needed for the brs reactor, for the plumbing im thinking red and white schedule 40 pipe and fittings to match the red sea skimmer.

got done with the manifold and plumbing (for the most part) this weekend and got the carbon and gfo reactor mounted, the UV should slot right into the open space on the left once its done.

Still deciding on circulation pumps at this point, cant decide between 2 mp10s (price is kind of prohibitive), 2 ice cap gyre

Are you going BB or sand? Gyres are wonderful but I found with sand it caused massive sand dunes in the 170. Granted mine was a single 230 from an old build at 30%. 2 may be fine as they can counter. I ended up with 2 Nero 5s.

I think since your running an XR30 (Non-Pro is fine IMO), having the MP10s (one for now) would work nicely as everything would be under a single Reeflink and will interface nicely with everything. Gyres not so much as you need to get the ICV6 as well (or something to connect to an apex if you go that route). Not having to use those silly little screens on controllers is a huge plus imo :D

unfortunately the wife is not budging on the BB proposition .. happy wife .. happy.. tolerates reef tank so sand it is, i have to agree the aesthetics of sand are there but the maintenance is a pain. i did end up buying special reef grade carib sea so hopefully it wont blow around too much. I was leaning towards the mp 10 but im not entirely sure if 1 is enough for an sps dominant tank, i agree the reef link would be a nice addition. I really dont see a need for an apex on this size tank, if it was larger i could justify it but i doubt ill get into that

i have to agree with you though, those screens on the ice cap controllers get looking reaaaaal mad scientist really quickly

I am curious how you are planning on mounting the UV. I have the same one and initially had it vertical and this caused issues with air getting trapped and deposits forming on the bulb. Its a bit too long to mount on the left side of the sump.

Also double check they sent you the right bulb...I am sure its a rare thing but they sent me a 8w ;Facepalm

Works great, well built unit.

ive actually already mounted it, i laid it down with the input and output facing up to avoid that. The bulb end was a little too big so i punched a hole through the stand just big enough for the end of the bulb so it would clear the cabinet door. I just used a regular hole saw to do so. Did this on my other tank to run an ATO container down there.

Thanks for the heads up! they sent me the correct bulb thankfully

ill take some photos when i get the UV fully plumbed in but i used the same hole to run my dosing lines into the sump and the power cords for the skimmer and return pump out without them being seen or in the way
