I have no talent for pen and paper. I still draw stick figures lol! I do excel at hands on in the shop though! This is in the finishing stages and going home next month! Great idea for a thread!

Thank you! I've been working on it since last summerThat came out fabulous! Nice work!
Awesome and thanks so much for sharing! I know theres more of us out there!Great idea for a thread! Graph paper is on my list of essentials for this hobby.
Here's a sample of a few sketches of the evolution of our systems to get caught up. I'm really glad that I dated everything...
To begin, we converted our 60gal Display from freshwater to saltwater in '16 without any knowledge by attempting HOB everything. That failed miserably, so we started reading about proper reefkeeping & the journey began.
#1 - Our first sump on the 60gal Display using a 20gal Tall:
We never found a skimmer to fit, but it served the purpose. We fought nitrates in this build & dedicated effort in the upgrade to mitigate this using biology.
#2 - Phase 3 concept - It was time to go big.
Great to see the reference to Tullock's quote & Borneman's surge on the page. They have been guiding for a few years now.
#3 - Gen3 Display Sketch
I had read about surge devices & they have been a part of the plan for awhile.
#4 - Final Gen3 DIY sump design.
At the time of our Phase III / Gen3 build, we settled on moving the refug into the sump.
#5 - Waterfall ATS
More biological filtration for approx $30. Why not...
#6 - Refugium Expansion
Since we had the space in the fish closet, we decided to fill it. We had a 17" x 17" refugium in the sump, but I needed the water in chamber for the surge device, so we installed a 30" x 53" Rubbermaid stock tank. Nice upgrade.
#7 - Automatic fish feeder
My daughter got in on the action with an copepod breeder. It's a work in progress.
#8 - Harnessing Sunlight
This project is on hold until the winter '20. When the leaves grew on the trees, we lost our light source.

Can't draw to save my life, but I can paint!
Man i love the idea with the tape. Perfect visual for dimensions to be put into perspective. Bravo.Because 4 tanks aren't enough for our system, it's time to add the Frag tank to our growing collection. As I cannot smash anything else into the stairwell (the current Fish Room), the plan is to extend into our storage area, which I have now decided to start calling the labratory. I need to make a sign for the door.
We have already purchased & drilled the 40b (dual 1 1/2" bulkheads), & we have plenty of 5gal buckets & 2x4"s. I'm captivated by the simplicity, success & low power requirements of our primary surge device on the DT, that we're adding another style to our Frag tank.
& simply because colored masking tape is fun to play with, he's the concept in the space (the shelf & outlet will be relocated):
