The number one tip for avoiding the swine flue, according to the crack talking heads at ABC7 Chicago:

Avoid sick people.

Must have been quite a meeting to come up with that. We're so proud of our newscasters.

Haha. We have some brilliant minds on the case. But seriously, you prevent this viral infection as you would any other. Wash your hands ad nauseum, and do not bring your hands above your neck. Oh and did I mention, wash your hands alot?!!!

well at least at this point it can be treated with antiviral meds, although history does tell us that the first wave is usually mild and then it comes on like gang busters, this is why the WHO and CDC are very concerned...Only have to go back to the Spainish Influenza of 1918-1920 to see how devastating a pandemic like this could possibly be.

I understand there is a potential to reach pandemic proportions but the ordinary flu kills 98 people per day so 1 death so far in the US and I think 7 in Mexico is no cause for us to run around the streets like chicken little screaming "the sky is falling".

Actually, the concern is how quickly this virus could possibly mutate into a much more dangerous and deadly strain.

I'm not a medical expert, I only play one on R2R :) but hopefully this all turns out to be a "trial run" for WHO and the CDC to help us all prepare in the case of an actual deadly pandemic.

I agree about how quickly it spreads and mutates. It seems that from the time of the first case until now, it has not spread that rapidly or caused that many fatalities according to the medical experts. I also agree that it is important that we "get it right" as far as preparing to deal with it and using this experience to make sure we can handle it in the future.

The news reported that Mexico had 150 deaths attributed to the swine flu and then the WHO came out and said ,"uh, no there have been 7, we have no idea where the 150 number came from" It was probably some reporter who interviewed someone, that spoke to someone else, that knew someone that lived next to the cousin of a hospital employee.....:bigsmile:
