I’m thinking about not battery backing up my return pump Vectra m2.
Main reason is that I want to be able to kill the return pump with apex without it going in battery backup mode.

This would mean my mp40 (maybe 2) Wil be hooked up and creating flow in my 160G for the time the power is out.

My 30 gallon sump only has a reef Mat, and a skimmer. Since they both don’t work during a power out, I don’t really see the really big importance of having flow there. Offcourse its not ideal, and will cause some nutrients I think of dead bacteria but more then that I can’t see why this would be a bad idea.
Anyone has some smart ideas about this?

I was going to put my m2 on the battery backup because my heaters were in the sump then realised they wouldn't be working anyway so never bothered! As long as you've got surface movement in the tank that's the main issue sorted. Pain having to disconnect the cable from the controller every time you want to turn something off, then reconnecting. so if you don't need it might as well not bother. Plus will get extra time to power your mp40s as well

Youll want to keep water aerated when power fails.
Return pump and skimmer, or add a battery powered airstone or 2.
In an emergency i think tank flow is less important.

i thought the circulation of the water created by the mp40 would be sufficient for at least 12H to provide emergency aeration
Providing its near the top of the water causing surface agitation allowing oxygen in to the water yeah

I dont know if this is the case. It might be.
I have lost fish in 7 hours when my return pump and skimmer were off, even with surface agitation.
Probably depends on your fish load.
We had a power failure for 36 hours another time and i put in a battery powered airstone. Tank got down to 63f, no fish or coral losses.
This are my experiences.
Now i have a 2000kwh battery ready to plug stuff into.

For the price of an ecotech battery + booster, you're better off buying a refurb ecoflow (1000+) and running your return off of it.
No need to worry about the sump that way either (it's less important than the display by far though)
