I just snapped these on my parents farm, I was able to sneak within about 60 yards of the bear before it laid down facing me and started to take in the sun. I was busted so I got up and left him be. If you look closely he is wearing a collar of some sorts.

Yeah it was a big guy for sure. I have harvested 2 of them but they were both only about 1/2 the size of this one. One of the two is on the wall above me right now.

Our season is in September I think, if it was open now I would have been looking at this guy through a whole different optical setup... Bear jerky is the best!

I met a black bear here in SE Texas where there aren't many of them. It was up a tree in Sam Houston National Forest where I was hiking. I never saw it until after I heard branches snapping, a thud as it landed on the ground, and a low growl. Luckily, it didn't go any further than that. They're amazing creatures, but yikes! Not an experience I want to repeat. I wonder if your bear is being tracked by a university or the government for research.

The Olympic National Park boundary is about 3 miles up the road so I am guessing he was ether relocated at one time or he was collared in the park. So yeah one way or another the GVT is on him watching what he does.

You're braver than me. I would have gone nowhere near that bad boy. Beautiful but not worth the risk. I'll stick to photographing corals :)

I have had a bunch of bear encounters in northern Wisconsin. Every single one is memorable. Nothing scares the crap out of you more than walking across a fallen tree and having something larger than you explode from under your feet(I'm 320 pounds) . I have always been lucky, no cubs. That is the only thing that would make me back out of a spot in the direction I just came. I haven't hunted in the northwoods for years but my brother in law says there are more bear and wolves than deer up there now.

That is a beatifull bear. I prefer mine grilled with lots of mushrooms and onions but I don't hunt them. Takes to long to draw a tag in wisconsin and I would only hunt them with a bow from the ground. I would probably pull out the old recurve for that hunt.
