Bio Pellet Updates

Unless your tank is pretty small and your biopellet need is low, I don't thing the TLF Phosban Reactor would work. Then again, there is the bigger model that might. I use the NextReef reactor, and love it.

That's the $64,000 question. Each brand has a recommended amount. And then people suggest you use less than recommended, adding more as time passes to increase its volume. I used 2 liters on a newly set up 400g system (that has 300g of water volume).

No, it is a completely different chemical reaction. GFO is essentially rust that PO4 binds to. Biopellets are a place for bacteria to breed, consuming NO3 and PO4. It is a way to carbon-dose around the clock.

I use TLF 550 reactor, 750 ml.of pellets in it. Very little tumble.I don't think you need pellets to tumble to much.

Correct, very little tumble, but are you getting any clumping using this reactor? I seem to get one side to tumble nicely while the other half of reactor doesn't move.

It works the same way as you describe,but I am not to worry about it.Its been working like this since beginning ( one year now),and no issues .Once a while I will shake reactor a little and that's it.

Time for another update. I've been using biopellets for almost 6 months now, and continue to measure 0 phosphate and 0 nitrate. This is the reactor I've been using:

I'm about to set up a new reactor to seed the Reef Octopus BioSpheres. After a few weeks, I'll take the current Vertex pellets offline and see how the Biospheres do over time. I'll report back with my results of course.

I have not tried bio pellets, but the biggest issue I have heard (burns crashes fish or reef) is when you run them with a higher alk of 3.5 meq/L. From what I gather it is on tanks that are new or in time after the bio pellets nukes existing po4 and nitrate. Other than that feed on and let your corals grow and monitor your tank.

Since the addition of the bio pellets on my system my zoas have slowdown in growth, in fact some have even shrunk back to their baby size. My chalices have done the same, slowed in growth, and a few have even started to receed. I never saw these issues before the addition of the pellets, and I am religious about my water perams.

My feeling is that I need to pull the pellets to see if I can get these things to recover.

You need to start feeding your tank a little bit more, I do drop a cube of rotifers every night, plus I feed my tank/fish 3+ times a day. Hope that helps!

I feed the fish daily, 2 cubes of Emerald Entree. Tank gets fed nightly with Phyto feast, and Arctipods. I have talked with Jon Warner about it, he suggested I add more fish to increase bio load, which I have. Still the problem persists.

I don't know exactly what I've done with LPS and zoas, they are thriving in my tank; and many zoas are growing like weeds. I had these chalices but sold them to a R2R member. They were growing really fast

How big is your tank?
