So lately I added some larger sand on top of my existing and I am getting quite a bit of hair algae... my phosphates on Hanna ULR phosphate checker reads .01 and nitrates are barely detectable on Salifert test. I know I have both in my tank by looking at the algae, just wondering if anyone can help. Is this just a mini cycle due to the new substrate or would you recommend phosphate remover or even dosing nitrates? My gut tells me to just ride it out but with a small system I’m not sure how the corals will react

I have a 40g SPS system. I would recommend riding most issues out as our little tanks don't respond well to reactive problem solving. If your tank was just started a few months ago it's going to go through all kinds of ugly phases before it finds it's happy place.

Thank you for the advice! That’s what I was thinking and will just continue with weekly water changes and won’t do anything different unless things start going down hill... I have learned with last tanks that over reacting can cause way more harm the. Good! Thank you again

Salinity 1.026
Temp 79-80
Alk 8.0-8.5
Cal 430
Mag haven’t checked in a while
Phosphate on ulr checker was .01
Nitrate on Salifert was barely detect

Phosphate and nitrate reading I don’t think are accurate because I have some hair algae growing

For my light I’m running AB+ program on 30% acclimation and my light is 10 inches above tank

For filtration I’m running a small bag of chemi pure elite, purigen and chaeto

Flow is IceCap 1K Gyre and Jebao SW-4 with a mj1200 for return

Hope this helps
