Hey all,

Was wondering if there is any advice for tankmates eel wise? Our current is a lone Black Edge around the 20" mark in a 210. Was thinking about getting a few more eels as the tank is pretty much his after my wife dubbed him her 'water puppy', that said I couldn't find anything as far as if eels will eat smaller ones or what would be considered a safe size for a new addition eel wise. Aside from him theres soft corals, well secured rock work...and snails so any eel species that is compatible with him would work.

I would look into the small fang tooth morays; goldentail, jeweled, yellow head. These guys are tough customers when they get fully mature. Keeping any fish with them can be a gamble. Very large and aggressive fish only, a 210 will be borderline with the fish you can keep, a couple of triggers, maybe an emporer angel, a sohal tang. Got to be tough characters, an eel tank is a good bet, just make sure there's enough den options.

We were thinking mostly just a few eels and that's it, will a yellow head not eat the Black Edge? Our LFS has one that's pushing 3 feet but is significantly larger I had been looking at but held off given I'd never hear the end of it if he ate my wife's eel lol

That's a push, you never know who will get the upper hand. The black edge has been known to kill other eels also. You must size them similarly. The yellow head is likely the most aggressive small fang tooth. The golden tail is very mild, and the jeweled is middle of the road. A chainlink is the only pebble tooth that may be able to hold their own, that one could be larger. I would rearrange the tank when introducing new eels, try and do a couple at a time.

I am assuming by upper hand you mean eating the smaller one? There is a yellowhead my LFS has I have been looking at bveing kept with a chainlink about the size of our BE. Do chains go after things such as small hermits? I've usually kept the fish eaters so my small hermits and other cuc have been reasonably safe from their attention.

A chzinlink is a pebble toith, so crustaens are their main diet.

True, just wondered if red/blue legs would be small enough to escape their notice.
