My clownfishes belly is swelling up and he keeps floating up toward the surface. He did still eat if that means anything (he normally swims a little funny as he is missing a fin but this is different)

I’ve never dealt with anything like this any ideas?

Clownfish use a gas-filled swim bladder to manage buoyancy, allowing them to remain upright and stable in the water column. When this organ malfunctions, it causes swim bladder disease, leading to symptoms like floating upside down, sinking, or struggling to swim due to infection, constipation, or poor water quality.
Key Aspects of Clownfish Swim Bladders:
Function: It is an internal organ that inflates or deflates to control buoyancy, allowing the fish to float, sink, or stay at a specific depth without swimming constantly.
Disease Causes: Common causes include overeating (causing constipation that presses on the bladder), bacterial infections, parasites, or sudden temperature changes.
Symptoms: Affected clownfish may swim sideways, upside down, struggle to stay upright, have a distended belly, or sink to the bottom.
Treatment & Care:
Dietary Adjustment: Feeding frozen foods or boiled, shelled peas can help clear constipation.
Environmental Changes: Raising the water temperature slightly (
) can speed up metabolism and alleviate issues.
Medication: Epsom salt baths (
tablespoon per
gallons) or antibiotics (Metronidazole/Neomycin) may be used if the cause is bacterial.
Prognosis: If treated promptly, clownfish often recover, but severe, untreated cases can be fatal.
For new clownfish experiencing issues, ensure the tank is properly cycled and check for salinity issues.

I would discourage you from just blindly following the AI generated advice posted above, and instead give one of the R2R Fish Medic team a chance to take a look. I can't personally see your video, but hopefully one of the fish medic guys is able to and will advise 🙂

Best of luck!

How long has the clownfish been this way?

The way it is swimming, indicates that there is gas trapped in its digestive system. The problem is, there is no way to tell why a blockage might have ocurred and then, how to resolve the issue. In some cases, the fish are able to release the gas on their own. There isn't any treatment that you can offer, other than supportive; make sure the other clown isn't picking on it and try to get it small bits of food.

There are other causes for abdominal swelling in fishes: Point #2 is what I suspect your fish has

He was fine all weekend so it had to of started some time yesterday. Honestly today the bloating has gone down a decent amount, keeping a close eye on him in case it gets worse

It’s also possible that it swallowed some air along with food and it needs to pass it out. I’ve actually seen fish farts 😀
