Hi all , wondering if anyone has a guideline to broadcasting cipro in a whole tank. Treating an anemone in a QT would be ideal but I sadly just don’t have the time / tanks to do that. I have cipro and I’m thinking of dosing it to the whole tank , there are a couple of anemones that don’t loook great. It could also be chemical ware fare because my rainbow BTA are doing fine but I have two sick green bta

I think that would be a mistake. 1) Cipro is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that will definitely affect your filter 2). It may affect corals, etc negatively. 3) levels will be hard to maintain due to rocks, etc.

See here for some detailed info on treating an entire tank.

It’s been done before , I think it would generally
Push the biome of bacteria to something that is more diverse , I think overtime diversity of bacteria trends downwards and cipro could help alleviate that and bring more beneficial bacteria. I’m just guessing here lol but I’m down to try it

If you read the R2R thread - the dose used (.125mg/L) that treats about 50% of the isolates of the bacteria that is claimed to be the causal agent (Arcobacter), especially depending on the species involved. (Maybe Arcobacter is not the pathogen) See article below. In human disease the LOWEST CONCENTRATION in the blood of CIPRO is 1.35 mg/L. This suggests to me (as the article says) - that CIPRO may not have done anything.

I know that others that use cipro for anemones use 250 mg/38.75 liters - which is a concentration of 6.49 mg/L. They also use a new tank - and re-dose every day. Cipro unless re-dosed in your tank is not going to last very long.

https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/how-i-cipro.211822/

As to changing the diversity of your tank - If you read the R2R thread provided above - they tested the genetics of the tank 3 times - before and after - and there was no change.

PS - no offense - and I'm not trying to be critical for the sake of being critical. One of the main causes of antibiotic resistance is using subtheraputic doses of antibiotics - in animal feeds, etc, etc. This is the reason that many countries around the world now allow antibiotic sales ONLY with the direction of veterinarians. So - with that also in mind, I think you're making a mistake. (and I have a degree in microbiology)

Ye there’s a lot of guessing / non exact science going on with cipro, but it seems dosing cipro does not really harm tank inhabitants and has the potential to do good or maybe everyone is getting lucky. I will probly run a daily 250mg dose daily for 6 days then do a 30% water change. I will keep skimmer on but remove carbon and gfo . Maybe I’ll create some super bacteria but I’m hoping for the best

Btw , I will also dose generally to the infected/sick anemones area by turning off flow and blowing the diluted cipro around the sickly anemones

Sorry I had my dosing wrong , I’m doing a total of 250mg dose over 6 days but first day I will start with a double dose - around 45mg of cipro daily and I have around 55-60 gallons of water

So that will give you .1875 mg/L. My GUESS - is that you will need more each day. Also the suggestion is to leave the lights lower (though looking through references - it does not seem to be as big a deal.

If I see improvement , I will probly up the dosage one nem has messentrial filaments coming from its tentacles so if that stops I’ll feel as if I’ve made progress

Not sure if you use carbon, a skimmer, etc - but I would stop those - also if you have an UV settings on your light - would turn those off

Wanted to update this , dosed 100mg first night and 50 mg for 2 other nights. Turned off carbon / left skimmer on. All sick nems appear to be getting better by the day , they actively seek out light by extending now and have mouth closed / no messentrial filaments. Will continue for 4 more days. No side effects besides possibly more film algae on glass lol

Tanks looks good - hope the improvement continues
Thanks man , I kno I didn’t do progress pics but the green btas look a lot better , and they extend for the light which I haven’t seen in a long time / have mouth closed. I’m hopeful! The first two days the sick nems were deflated / expelling stuff all day , cipro seems to be working

I would carefully watch for any parameter changes during treatment. You're using a very low dose. It could be coincidence - it could be that arcobacter is not the pathogen who knows. If its working - its working

Measured yesterday and everything is normal , ph 8.2 nitrate 20 ppm phos .11ppm , alk 9.6 , cal 450
I will up the dosage to 100mg for the last two days and maybe even a whole tablet 500mg for the last day as I have 10g of water change ready.

Just dosed my main tank for the first time last night and have my euphyllia in a concentrated bath right now.

I've lost over a dozen corals to BJD in the last month. Cipro may not be the only answer, but if it helps, I'm all for it
Sorry to hear that man , hoping cipro helps you out! I like to treat it like antibiotics that I’ve taken which means strong initial dose to kickstart process then continual lower dosing over a period of 7-10 days , I’m doing 1mg per gallon

Updating nems are still recovering , mouths are closed and gaining back color , one green was on side so dirty glass lol they reach toward light now and don’t deflate
Other nems doing fine and no side effects from dosing cipro
