Established 300gal pond and BAM!...bubble algea out of nowhere. I haven't added anything new to the tank that could've carried it in.

I have 5 or 6 Emerald Crabs but it's spreading too fast to keep up with. I pick up 6 more on Friday.

I've started manually removing it. It's it true it spreads it if you pop them?

I ordered a Foxface that will be here Thurs.

Any other methods of eradication?

It was everywhere manual removal was doing nothing. Now My foxface gets everything except stuff in crevices. I picked up a rock and there was bubble algae and the foxface about knocked me over getting to it.

Yep brute force manual removal is needed. I’m dealing with a small outbreak now myself. I chip away at it and my foxface happily eats it up.

The most recent info on bubble algae that I have read is that popping the bubbles does not spread the algae. If that were the case, emerald crabs would be spreading it since they pop the bubble as they eat it.

I have not had great success with emerald crabs or manual removal. But, Vibrant worked like a charm the two times I got bubble algae that was going out of control. Just start slow with it by going with half the recommended dose and then increasing it weekly. After about 6 weeks, the stuff is gone.

2 words - Pitho crabs. I wish I had before pics. Every bare surface covered. 4 Pithos in a 50 and it was gone in a month. That was several months ago, they are still around, have not bothered any corals, model citizens.

Without checking every online retailer, hoping to find them, do you know of anywhere with them in inventory?

EDIT: Found some. I just ordered 10 of them. Thanks!

I’ve been through 2 pithos in my 25g tank. First one ate bubble algae like a kid in a candy store. It only lasted 3 days though and the crab died out of nowhere. Got another one and never saw it once touch bubble algae but saw some bubble algae disappear. It wasn’t keeping up though.

I upped my AlgaeFix dosage to 3ml twice a week. Super aggressive dose but the bubble algae started falling off the rock like crazy. They were just floating around all over the tank getting stuck on the pump. So once a week I siphon off the pump during my water change and also use the tubing to scrape off as much bubble algae as I can.

Only a few corals in the tank but zero issues so far. Just understand what you’re dosing and decide if you’re comfortable with it
