Woke up this morning to my Anthia’s eye looking like this. There is a bubble around her eye which seems to have stuff inside it. She was just fine yesterday and she is eating ok. I recently added copepods and phytoplankton to the tank. All other fish are ok. Any idea what it could be?

Looks to be gas bubble embolism as eye socket is weakest part of fish and often the fish will release air from socket on its own however, to prevent infection, treat in separate tank using maracyn as pictured below

Thank you for your response. So if it is a gas bubble embolism, it will go away on its own? I don’t have another tank in the moment but if i have to treat it i can probably go get one. Will the Maracyn just be used as a prophylactic?

Maracyn is a treatment for eye issues and have it on hand in case needed
Often eye issues like this will end up milky or even breaking open and I prefer prevention than disaster
Yes, there are cases where it deflates on its own

That’s most likely an embolism from an injury. Bubbles in both eyes and in multiple fish can be caused by mechanical supersaturation of the water with gas, but I do t think that’s the case here. I don’t see signs of infection, so antibiotics won’t help.

Here is an article I wrote on fish eye health:

It’s such a coincidence that the physical trauma section of your article is another Anthia just like mines. Looking at my fish now it looks exactly like you described and does look more like physical trauma. So the best course of action here is technically just a waiting game hoping it resolves on its own right?

Have you used Maracyn in your display tank? Is it safe for my reef tank?

Yes and do not use in display especially in presence of coral and inverts. Best in separate tank with air stone added
