FWIW, just because an LED is a 3w diode, doesn't necessarily mean that they're driven at 3w a piece. I have three of the 150w LED fixtures from ReefFiltration. They use 119 3w diodes, but only drive them at 1.26w to extend life.

What brand diodes are they using?

just seems weird to run it so weak for life when cree users can run theirs at a higher wattage without concern to life.

FYI

A lot of Chinese fixtures run 1, 2 or 3 watt LEDs at a lot less because they dont have a large enough heatsink. Hate to say it but size matters...

They push the engineering envelope to the max hoping the LEDs stay cool enough to last the 1-2 year warranty.

Some XP-E Strips we will offer soon are thermally stable in free air at 350mA but at 700mA they need a quality heatsink.
