Hi,

I have a newly bought copperband in QT now. Have him for only 5 days and no medication yet as I wanted to make him eat first. Now he has started eating masstick and LRS off clam shells .

I was planning to start API General Cure treatment today but yesterday observed fin rot on the tail - cloudy and fuzzy with ragged torn tail fins. Its bacterial .

I have Furan 2 on hand and hence wondering can I do General Cure and Furan 2 at teh same time ?

If not, how do you propose me to start the medications?

Regards,
Abhishek

Thanks for reply .
Is it better to treat for fin rot first and then for normal quarantine process ?

Regards,
Abhishek

Yes, its always recommended to treat injury/infection first and then proceed with the normal quarantine process.

Well I started Furan 2 and GC . The copperband has stopped eating .

It was voraciously eating easy reef Masstick but now it hasn't touched it in 24 hrs.
Suppose this is normal due to GC containing metro and prazi .

Should I try black worms ? How long can I go without it eating anything ?

ABHISHEK

So , I have been following instructions on Furan 2 and API general cure and treating the fish .
It doesn't look great am afraid .
Attached is a pic of the tail rot .

I have ordered seachem focus and kanaplex along with some more API Furan 2.

CB is not eating from yesterday due to prazi in API General cure I think .

Wednesday will be the last day for the API GC and will do 25. % water change .

But how do I administer kanaplex with focus if it doesn't eat ?

Thoughts ?

Note :- there are no marks on the body .Its just salt creep of the tank

Is there redness near the base of the tail? I think I see it from the pic but am not 100% sure.

Yes and it's not looking good . The redness seem to be spreading .
I am following only Furan 2 and have kanaplex and focus on the way .

It's getting worse . Am afraid it might be too late but still seek your advice .

It's likely a gram negative infection; butterflies are prone to septicemia and vibrio. :(

This is my treatment of choice for butterflies w/bacterial infections: http://store.nationalfishpharm.com/Nitrofuracin-Green-59584.Item.html

My backup plan would be to dose all 3 of these meds: Furan-2 + Kanaplex + Metroplex

I think it might be septicemia .. too bad I did not proactively treat it .
I was allowing it to eat and went with my normal General cure treatment .
QT was cycled too !!
It's quite late now I think but will try .

@Humblefish - I have got kanaplex coming in today . How do I administer kanaplex if it's not eating at all ?
Also how realistic it is in your experience for the copperband to survive a bacterial infection when it has spread all the way from his tail upwards into the body ?

Abhishek

You can (and should) dose Kanaplex directly into the water for an external infection like this. 1 scoop per 5 gallons every 48 hours. Treat for 10-14 days.

Unfortunately, the odds of a fish surviving a gram negative bacterial infection are low. I'm sorry. :(

@Abhishek If you plan on keeping butterflyfish and treating the inevitable infections new specimens get, I highly recommend keeping the two meds below on hand:

Ruby Reef Rally (contains acriflavine - an antiseptic which can be used to provide temporary relief)

Nitrofuracin Green Powder (is best at knocking out gram negative infections in QT)

The blue links above provide more info. You are probably going to lose this battle, but if you are better equipped next time you will win the war.

Lesson learnt - always stocked on antibiotics for ich and flukes and internal worms .. only had Furan 2 for bacterial .
Now gonna stock up on bacterial .

Thanks everyone for trying to help .

Abhishek
