Over the past two weeks alot of my chalices have started to show white skeleton around the edges. Not sure why. At first I thought they where being stung. But it has happened to several and that idea is out. Then I thought my levels where off so I checked. Cal is 400 Alk is 9 ( moving it to 10 per advice from Ktar) Mag is 1350. All the levels seem ok and stay the same day after day. My only concern is the temp at night it goes from 77.8 to 80.1. Is that the reason? What should my ph be? Those are the last two ideas I have it could be. All my zoos are fine. It is just my chalices. I have done a medium size water change and put fresh carbon in. If anyone could please help me. It is so hard to see corals that you grow from tiny frags to small colonys die. I thought about breaking my tank down and giving the hobby up due to the dissappointment. Ant postive help or advice would really be a help. Thank you Frank

stop dosing kalk or alkalinity would be one route.

What is your pH measuring?

Also, what is your salinity and how are you measuring it? I've noticed that chalices in particular don't seem to like higher salinity (but I only have a handful of chalices, so that may just be the few I have).

mag 1450 cal 480

Are those your suggestions? I don't have a problem with the Mg, but calcium that high is basically a waste. Plus, he would need his alkalinity to be at 16.5dKh in order to be balanced out.

I think a range of 400-430 for calcium is good enough - it gives a buffer both ways before anything gets out of whack big time.

i had this happen to me.... my prob was i decided to switch to TM bio actif salt... Its might be awesome for SPS but my chalices hated it.... It happened slowly over three months too. my ORP went down to 225 and it stayed there. now after 3 large water changes, things are starting to get back to normal.... If you have a prob with these black little pods, I heard that you can see them on your chalices.... Mine seemed to be a water quality issue..... Also, be careful with changing carbon and lighting.... Alot of people kill corals this way.

I've had the same thing happen to me. I switched to TM Bioactif and all my LPS stared receding. I'm still using it right now but I didn't have anything to go by until your post. I thought that my water was too clean and I have been feedin my tank alot to keep them from receding further but now I have cyano everywhere. Now that I've heard someone else with the same problem, I might go back to TM Pro like before. I still have half a bucket left. My sps are looking great too. I like my LPS more so I'll favor them over SPS and do what's best for them.

To make it worse, I changed my carbon a few weeks ago too and I need to change my bulbs like real soon. What's the best way to do that?

What if you just raised your heater to 79? Then you should see a temp change of 79-80. I swing 1.3-1.5 degrees daily. I'm no chalice expert by any means, but I don't think 2.3 degree swing is going to effect that much. I have had numerous other LPS do just fine with a 6 degree swing daily.

What is your salinity, and what are you using to measure it?

Do you have any fish that may be bothering the chalices? And the temperature swing should have little to do with it considering mine also sways about 4 degrees and all my chalices are still happy and growing..
