I have a clarisea sk 5000 that gave the motor shorting error code. I followed the instructions on the website stating that most issues have to do with a wire disconnecting, but that wasn't the case for me. Looking around online, replacement motors would cost close to $200 to ship to the US. I saw that there is a thread about this but the pictures are gone and it was difficult to track down the items needed. I ended up using the Google image search on the motor which pointed me in the right direction.

The motor appears to be model JGB37‑520, which seems to be a generic motor with multiple different possible gearboxes attached to it. The motor is more powerful and shorter than the one that came with the Clarisea and only cost $11 on Amazon. I purchased a DC 12V 45rpm because I planned on changing the gearbox to the original one because the Clariseas drive had a threaded hole through it and the motors online did not.

This was fairly easy to do although the rotor on the new motor had a diagonal cut gear on it, while the Clarisea had a vertical one. I took the bottom gear off the new gearbox and replaced the Clariseas gear with it and it fit perfectly. After that, I was able to attach the gearbox to the new motor. Make sure the motor is turning clockwise, I originally wired the red wire to the positive terminal and the Clarisea rotated backward - so I had to take it apart again and change the wires to the opposite terminals. The motors and gearboxes both seem to follow a standard design, with all the screws lining up perfectly.

I had never used a soldering iron before but it wasn't too difficult. In the end, I saved a load of money over a replacement filter roller or a new Clarisea motor from across the Atlantic. motorinhousing.jpg motor size comparison.jpg motor gears.jpg motor gear comp.jpg

What Gen is the model? I wonder if there is any difference in the motors between 1 2 and 3.

Thank you very much for the information. I just ordered it yesterday in England for $180. But I’ll try to change it on the old one, if it works, let me know how it works.

It seems to be working well so far, about 4 days in. If anything it seems stronger than the original

Hey OP! I just had my motor replaced based on everything you recommended above! Just wanted to say thank you so much! Everything is working for couple of days now and looking good and strong
This is something that happened to me in the past already and I couldn’t figure out how to open it and get to the motor I actually had to get the hole thing replaced (at least it was used one on a good price) but the same thing happened again and the motor died.
I was about to order the Red Sea one and then decided to go on the lookout for someone like you that was able to fix it DIY.
I ordered 3 motors until I got the right one to fit properly to everything and it was really not that bad thanks to you!
I sent back the other 2 motors that didn’t fit and ordered one more form the right one to have on hand in case this will happen again in the future!
Thanks again and happy reefing!

+1 on where you got the correct motor from. My 5000 just failed last night and I took apart the assembly and the wires look in tact. I pulled them off and I’m going to attempt to re-solder them but I’m thinking the motor died.

So just to update, the motor has been working flawlessly for about a year. Actually seems like an upgrade in that it seems to pull stronger than the original one

Sweet! I tried re-soldering my motor tonight and it’s still throwing the error code for a shirt circuit in the motor. The replacement motor from Amazon comes on Saturday, hopefully that works. I’m not sure I understand what you had to do with the new motor assembly to make it fit but maybe it will make more sense when I get the new motor and can play with it.

Got the new motor today. This was my first time using a soldering iron as well but I was able to make a successful repair. With $15 for the motor from Amazon and $25 for a basic soldering iron from Home Depot this was well worth the effort! I’m probably going to order a spare motor as well while they are still cheap and available. Thanks for all the info!

The new motor is super quiet compared to the original motor. It used to sound like a sheep bleating but now it’s about as quiet as Kamoer dosing pump.

Hello mate, I bump this thread only to say thank you so much for your post!
I had the same problem 10 days ago, I followed your instructions, changed the gears of the new one and now my filter roller is working perfectly as before!
Thank you so much again, I just avoided to pay 80 bucks for the original replacement from Clarisea!
Cheers!

How did you remove the old motor from the housing? I can’t remove the motor shaft.
