Has anyone here changed the Red Sea diaphragm valve to a Spears gate valve? I have a Red Sea 750 XXL G2, and I'm wondering what plumbing parts I will need to accomplish this. The G2 plumbing is different from older Red Sea tanks, and I can't find much info online. What size diameter is this G2 downpipe? Do I need specialty parts, or can I find what I need at Home Depot? I believe I need to install the 1" Spears gate valve slip x slip. I have attached a picture of my current setup. Thanks!

yes i was able to modify my RS valve. I was able to piece together mine with standard PVC pieces but because it wasnt as deep, i added silicone tape around the new connection.

I have some pics of my sump in my tank thread..

Can you elaborate with more details? What size PVC pipe did you use? Where did you make connections? Any pictures?

I modified the upgrade plumbing kit for my E170 to add a sump. I was limited by the RedSea threaded bulkhead/gasket main drain which included the hard PVC RS gate valve. I do not know the exact size but believe it was metric. I knew i had to use the included threaded gasket so i basically used my pvc cutter to cut as far down the stem, closet to the RS valve. The stem, even though it was metric, fit inside a schedule 80 1in gate valve from BRS. It was snug but not perfect. Also i was a little worried it wasnt the full depth of a usual PVC connection, so after i glued it, i wrapped in plumping silicone tape.

Interesting. I have a different plumbing configuration in the 750 XXL G2. Still trying to figure out what size it is in millimeters.

Ive done this on two different RS tanks that I no longer own. I can’t find pics. On my Reefer, I cut the down pipe below connection from the tank and glued in a metric to standard coupler and went from there. Stupid easy. For my Max I did the same under the tank, but the valve on that tank is up high, so I opened it up fully and just left it like that. And did a similar approach to my reefer. All stupid easy.

Mine broke above the union; it is indeed metric fittings and pipe; and an oddball size of metric pipe! (36mm OD). Bulkheads are siliconed on to the bottom of the tank/require cutting out the overflow box to replace…

I tested the plastic with all purpose pipe cement; it’s definitely PVC or ABS related plastic; the cement works fine on it!

Given that BRS doesn’t sell a 36mm to anything imperial fitting of any sort that I could find; I got the calipers out and dug around in my box of fittings…

It turns out a 1” NPT to 1” female slip coupler is just shy of big enough to slip over the pipe once the male union threads are cut off!

A die grinder, a bit of patience, and I had the NPT to slip adapter sized just right to cement on to the now bare pipe!

Add a generic 1” NPT union and gate valve, or a fancy union/gate valve combo and you’re set!

Thanks for the comments so far everyone. I'm still looking for confirmation on the Red Sea downpipe size. Is it a 32mm drain pipe going to the valve on the 750 XXL G2? I'll order the correct adapter from BRS once I know for sure.
