Hi,

I'm just starting to dose this now but came across some threads questioning if the dosing of 5ml per 4 gallons is correct. Any update on that? How much should I dose? Also the instructions don't say but can I put it all in at once or must I spread it out over a few days? Thanks

Yes, that's what the bottle says. But here's a few tips:

Spread out the dosage over 3-5 days unless you are treating Velvet or really bad Ich. I like to dose a bit in the AM and then again later in the PM. This allows you to watch for copper sensitive fish.

There has been a problem with the strength varying from bottle to bottle, so you can't just rely on their dosing recommendations. Using a test kit is the minimum but a Hanna HL Copper Checker is way better to avoid under/over dosing. Therapeutic range begins at 1.5 and many target 2.0 as the sweet spot to maintain to clear the parasites.

Yes I am treating velvet. How quick can I dose it? Is there still a dosage issue? I'd rather not have to test

Testing is the only way to know for sure if you are under or over dosing the copper. It is a poison. And overdosing can cause long term harm to your fish, and in extreme cases can be fatal.

For Velvet you want to get to therapeutic level within 24-48 hours. Small regular doses every few hours is best for the fish and not so hard on their organs and nervous system.

Giving your fish a freshwater dip each day will remove a tremendous number of the parasites from the fish's gills. Velvet often kills by overwhelming the fish's ability to breathe in O2. It will buy the fish time until the copper gets to therapeutic. The copper only kills the parasites when they are in the "free swimming" stage of life. And that's after they have dropped off the fish and are looking to re-infect again. So your fish has to weather the parasites already attached. So a FW dip will get many of them off the fish.

Problem is that there is no regulation standards that any manufacture has to adhere to. And they didn't. So many of us avoid Coppersafe and instead use Copper Power which has been more accurate.

How has the coppersafe been working? I purchased it for my qt tank too.

Hard to tell. I caved a got a Hannah checker and at the recommended dosage it reads about 2.5 ppm. I lowered it and now am about 1.9. I lost a few fish from what I believe the be the copper. A firefish and 2 wrasses. I still do see my tangs flashing which is pretty odd as my copper has been around 2 PPM for over a week already.
