Looking to determine what type of brain coral this is. LFS gave me it for free as a B-Day gift.

Looks like a lobophyllia to me but not 100% sure

Looks like a Acanthastrea of some sort. If you could get a closer picture of it through the glass that's more focused it will be easier to tell.

Looks to be a Symphyllia / Lobophyllia, IMO.

Would need a more in-focus image to tell, but might be Platygyra or Australophyllia. Valley width seems too small to be Lobo

likely Platygyra, could also possibly be Oulophyllia but unlikely given coloration. Unusually fleshy if it is a Platygyra

Leaning towards Platygyra, the polyps aren’t ‘singular’ like an acan would be.

Acanthastrea has monocentric corallites while this coral has sinuous valleys
(PS. bowerbankis are Homophyllia, same genus as Scolys, not Acanthastrea)

Thats why I said possibly as one or the other......Ive been doing this a long time and know the difference in genus, thanks

I see, I had thought you were saying "Acanthstrea to me, possibly bowerbanki" as in 'Acanthastrea, subset of that, bowerbanki' as oppose to 'Acanthastrea or bowerbanki'.

Now that I take a closer look actually, it might be an EXTREMELY deformed Dragon's Soul/Prism "Favia" (technically Dipsastraea rosaria or Favites [para]flexuosa depending on the specimen). I've seen specimens kept in aquaria for a long time become increasingly deformed like this.

depends on the conditions of your tank, but likely not. Corals tend to deform in aquaria for reasons unknown to us.
