Wow, I’ve really enjoyed following along with your build! From the home remodel to using cranes to get the tanks in, and then bringing your vision to life—it’s been nothing short of inspiring. The amount of planning and dedication you’ve put into this project is incredible, and the results so far are absolutely beautiful.

That tank is a great score, the regular corals would make for good testers in ur tank when running. Agree with the choice to keep one tank for now at least this way it gets ur full attention , much better than caring for 2 tanks in startup mode !

I actually had both tanks running at one point, and after finishing the glass cleaning on one, I realized I had to do it all over again on the second… and thought, nope, don’t want to haha.

Plus, the second tank is heading to an amazing reefer here in Riyadh who’ll make much better use of it than I could.

Time to Rock It Out & Light It Up (UPDATE#5):
Aquascape
! This word scares me and annoys me at the same time. On one hand, I always want something artistic and nice to look at from day one. On the other hand, I want something that is a good habitat for both fish and corals. I’m not exactly easy to please, so I’ve mostly done my own aquascapes in the past. I often end up breaking them apart a few times until I finally get something I want.

This time, I got some help from a friend. After weeks of discussing ideas with him, I was finally delivered the scape you see below, while I was visiting my parents outside of Riyadh.

I wasn’t exactly sure about it at first. On one hand, it was actually what I had requested. A shape that leans toward the back on both sides and pushes toward the front glass in the middle. Additionally, it should rise higher in the center than on the sides, and higher in the back than in the front. The layout below is more or less what I was aiming to get.

Anyway, I loaded it up in the car with a bunch of pillows and drove six hours back to Riyadh from my parents’ place.

A few hours after arriving, my Chief Inspection & Quality Assurance Officer had to take a look to make sure it met his standards. That would be Faris, my youngest son 🙂.

This is the scape inside the aquarium. Something about it just didn’t feel right to me.

So I decided, after consulting a bunch of my reefer friends, to make some minor changes to it. One rock removed from here, a small piece taken from there… and before I knew it, it was all rubble and dust. Things got horribly out of control!

I tried putting things back together, but it just didn’t work out. My head was cloudy, and the vision I had for how I wanted this scape to look was shattered into a million pieces (pun intended).

The next day, I decided to use the scape from the aquarium I bought. Coincidentally, it was also made by the same person who built the scape I had just destroyed. But first, it needed a chlorine bath to clean it up and reset the rocks back to dry rock. The scape was full of pests and hair algae, and I wasn’t about to introduce any of that into my new system.

This scape came in three separate islands. Not exactly what I wanted, but I hoped that if I cleaned it up and placed the pieces side by side, inspiration would eventually kick in.

Inspiration kick in indeed! After a few hours of adding small pieces here and there, with a reefer friend joining in to help, things started coming together.

This was the final result.

I covered the whole thing with mortar to unify the color and texture, and this is what I was left with.
I’m happy with the results.

Now that the scape was sorted, I had to deal with the massive challenge I created for myself with the lighting and canopy.

The idea was for the floating canopy to act like one massive unit of light. To make that work, I needed something that could act as a diffuser and close up the gap.

Imagine a Radion diffuser, but stretched out to 200 cm wide.

I went on a quest to test as many materials as I could find. I tried three types of plastics and even some photography light diffusion sheets.

I wanted something that would cause the least amount of PAR loss while still achieving the “one unit” look.

After a lot of trial and error, with tons of PAR measurements and testing, I landed on a 1 mm thick white PETG sheet. I had it cut using a large laser cutter.

Loading this into the car was a challenge to say the least.

Before dropping in the scape and sand, I installed the holders for my lighting setup.

The lights aren’t actually installed yet. What you see here is just the light coming from the frag aquarium in the fish room.

I second that. It was a mistake taking things apart, and it rolled out of control very quickly.

By the way, you commented before the full update was completed 🙂. Take a look at the lighting diffuser when you get the chance.

Amazing scape outcome! Also I don't think it was a mistake taking the scape apart. I think thats what instills creativity and lets you play around to find the look you really want! I love the diffusion on the lighting as well. So much creativity and thought process on this build! Pure amazingness! Keep up the pristine work! It looks awesome thus far.

Unfortunately, the first thing I noticed when I brought back my old (and actually first) aquarium was that it was scratched to hell. I couldn’t accept that, so I had a new one made.

A HOB filter with well-cycled bio-balls should keep this aquarium running safely.

I then turned my attention to the cabinet. I hated the Innovative Marine stand, and it was pretty beaten up anyway. I’ve always wanted to try working with aluminum extrusion, so I went for it.

I designed a simple stand, ordered the parts, and put it together.

Hi Khalil,

Thank you for the question.

I’m assuming you’re referring to the aluminum table. This material is called aluminum extrusion. It’s very versatile and commonly used to build structures. While it’s mainly used in manufacturing and automation, it has plenty of other applications as well.

I sourced mine from a local company here in Riyadh called SMARTEC. They usually deal with manufacturing and automation projects, but they were kind enough to accommodate my small request.

Just a heads-up: this material isn’t cheap, so expect to pay a premium. That said, it’s extremely lightweight yet very strong, which makes it worth considering.
 
The very next day, we moved our attention to the wood walls and the hidden door. That part actually went surprisingly smooth. I’ll leave you with the pictures 🙂

I loved the final result
. I got so caught up in planning and executing the build that I completely forgot I was actually building my dream aquarium. This was the moment it finally hit me again. I could feel that spark come back.

To test the diffuser idea, I used one of those fabric sheets photographers use for lighting. I installed it to block the light gap inside the canopy and see how it would perform. The final solution will be more permanent though.

The next day, the carpenter finished building the cabinet we added inside for electrical work, controllers, and whatever else I need to stash in there.
