My tank is 2.5 years old and I've never really had a lot of coralline algae or at least I don't think I have. Most tanks I see with lots of coralline have a very light purple on their rocks and tank walls. What I do have is a very dark maroon color on my rocks and walls. I have heard of coralline coming in different colors, but I'm still not sure that is what I have.

The main reason I'm not convinced it is coralline is the growth pattern. They seem to grow in a circular shape. So in the pictures below you are looking at some of my tonga branch and the stuff I need help with identifying. Coralline?

Coraline does come in many shades. It also does grow in a circular pattern. Do you dose calcium and something for alk? Depending on the calcium requirements of your tank, your corals, inverts and clams could be using up all available calcium. If I do not dose my 2 part daily, my coraline will begin to die off in 2 days.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that I have also had this stuff in almost a shade of orange. As for dosing, I just started about 3 months ago. I used to just do water changes, but now that my tank is sps dominant, I dose BRS 2 part. Would like to hear others chime in so that I can be positive of the id.

Coraline algaes grow in a lower spectrum than most corals. So it would be normal to see it in more shaded areas. The top of my rocks always were last to grow coraline.
