DIY Lanthanum Dosing

Trying to wrap my head around the numbers.
265G /1000L system with Phos at 1.15

Would be dosing LC into skimmer input via dosing head split over 24hrs with a 10 micron sock hanging off the output of the skimmer

Looking to purchase Lanthanum Chloride Heptahydrate and finding on amazon 50G for $60
@ 9G per 500ml rodi

theoretically mixing all 50G LC into a little under 3/4g (.726g or 2750ml) of a gallon of rodi per recipe on first post.

What is the shelf life of 3/4G of this mix? Can I mix it complete, ad to a dosing container and allow my dosing head to drop it into my skimmers input.

At the mix rate listed above what would be a very safe dosing rate per day?

My system is 1000L so 10x the original sample.
Dosing 10ml / day then should remove .047ppm Phos

Is 10ml / day a reasonable starting place? At this rate after 7 days I could see a reduction of .329 ppm not taking into account leaching and adding phosphates on a daily basis with feeding etc.

I’d go off the recommendation I made in post 1 about targeting to remove 0.05 ppm per day.

Shelf life is unlimited.

OK so then yes the 10ml per day should net .047ppm daily removal.

Maybe instead of 50G I will find 25G.
275 days worth of LC mix may be unnecessary to have sitting around.

I need some advice. I have a 375 gallon tank with lots of fish and soft Corals. Although my Corals and fish are doing fine, my phosphates are out of control, testing at 2.5. After doing a lot of research and studying this thread, I took Randy’s advice and used his recipe to make a lanthanum solution using the recommended bottle of Lanthanum chloride.



My recipe: 1 ml per 26 gallons of LaCl recipe. 375/26 is 14 ml per day and dissolve 9gms of La Cl in 500 ml and dose 1 ml at a time. I then took this solution and mixed it in 2000ml RODI water to make 2500ml which is a 5X dilution factor. I then figured out I needed to dose 70 mL a day of the diluted solution that would equal the 14 mL of the original lanthanum solution. 70 divided by 24 hours is 2.91 or 3 ml of solution that I am dosing in a 24 hour period by my Dos pump.



I have dosed this solution into my skimmer for the last 3 weeks with no ill effect to any of my fish. However I have not seen any drop in my phosphate level at all. Can someone check my math or tell me what you think the problem might be? Thanks

What is the test kit you're using?
I've found that most are unreliable.
I've gotten good results using Red Sea Phosphate Pro.
You may also want to send in an ICP to a vendor that specifically tests for Phosphate.

I've not checked the math, but the more likely issue is the large amount of phosphate stuck to rock and sand will help maintain the phosphate level as you try to lower it. It desorbs to try to maintain the water level.

Thus, it will al;ways take a lot more than "calculated" and I'd use calculations only to make sure you are not overdosing.

"Although my Corals and fish are doing fine, my phosphates are out of control, testing at 2.5" This reminds me where I was several months ago: My PO never drops below 1.0. and I went thru my LAN phase on my 33 year old, heavily rocked system and concluded LAN was not the correct way, as all I did was create instability.
I do run GFO 24/7 and tho PO is still 1.0 and my corals and fish are doing fine.
