Local fish stores (LFS) can bring mixed emotions. I'm one of the ones who has some great LFS with knowledgeable staff and responsibly cared-for livestock, but others aren't so lucky. Some LFS can leave you feeling excited about your new additions, whether it be livestock or equipment, while others can leave you shaking your head...

PSA: Please refrain from calling out stores by name and making this a customer review thread. That's what Yelp is for. :)

I voted other. Local for me is a 45 minute drive and there are 4 lfs in that range. They all have some good and bad points but one in particular is saltwater only with a really good selection of dry goods including top shelf lighting and controllers etc. He keeps some pretty nice livestock. The owner and staff are knowledgeable and and helpful. I never leave that one disappointed.

Disappointed when I got home, and one of the "snails" I buy is just a shell.

Okay, that's true, BUT we also did not realize it was just a shell for several days lol.

Depends on which LFS. One of them has frag tanks overgrown with Xenia and they're charging twice as much as the other LFS that keeps clean tanks. The ONLY thing nice about that store is that their BTAs look beautiful.

But the other store sells frags at a bit more than you might expect from a private seller, so IMO that's pretty decent.

Other. Fairly new and really close by, I'm pretty happy with overall. But I live in the SF Bay Area, and there are a LOT of LFSs here. I'm fairly unimpressed with most of them, though one has a lot of gear and has been quite helpful... But I won't buy livestock from them anymore.

i get what i can to the best of their quality. dry goods tend to be better value. live goods are overpriced and tend to have the usual pests like nuisance algae, aiptasia, etc- from time to time.

I love my LFS. They are very friendly, and they really care about the aquatic animals they have. I have seen many negative reviews for their business because of people upset that they wouldn't sell them fish for an improper setup. The owner is a chill guy and want all of his employees to be very aware of the fact that they are working with live animals, not just product. Good people.

When I get the privelige of visiting a LFS I am prepared for the worst & the best possible experience while I am there. I don't let the experience dictate my mood when I leave, I am happy I got to "spin the wheel."

If I let the moods of customer service folks decide how I feel about a retail experiece then I should expect to be dissappointed more often than not. I choose not to let their mood in the situation determine mine. IF any retail outlet is contaminated with attitude "foobar" I leave before I become infected.
