Howdy, I did a search on using egg crate under my rocks before posting and didn't really find an answer. I know and have read why it's a good idea (which I haven't done in the past) but saw a statement saying that if I did the entire bottom it could cause dead spots and/or problems. Why is that? Also, how much larger would you recommend making the crate than the base of the rocks?

Not sure what dead spots you or actually they mean. But folks do have a tendency to worry about nothing.
As far as size you need enough to create a stable base. So it stands up by its self.
