I found a fish in the overflow. Any suggestions on how to rescue him without dismantling the plumbing? It's about 28" deep.

I thought about that. I was concerned that he may get hurt. It's an adult neon goby. I was going to try my luck at using a net and see how that goes.

Syphoning is just a ride down a tube. Shouldnt hurt the fish. Most can even swim faster than a syphon will pull. Just make sure big enough. Might take a couple tries of filling. Or filling and syphoning same time. If you can remove just the cap for overflow that goes to sump, you can put a net under where it returns and kind of chase it that way. Also as stated 2 nets and something to heard it can work lol.

Could you make an ultra-mini net from a wire coat hanger and pantyhose material?

can you pull the drain pipe and let him get sucked into a filter sock?
This is how I got my clown out last fall. It was quite an ordeal for her, taking a ride into my basement sump, but 8 months later I suspect she has forgotten all about it 😀
Mine would have a short 2' ride.

Don't be afraid to let them go down the pipes. I have Molly's breeding and all of them figure out how to ride the elevator up and down to the basement till they get a certain size. No matter where I stick them, they end up back in their favorite sump compartment.

Good news, I managed to fish him out by draining most of the water and scooping him out with a small net. Thanks for the advice.

Glad you got him. I have a war paint goby that has been living in the back compartment of a 9g aio for like a year. I have been unable to catch him and eventually just gave up. Im upgrading that tank soon, so ill get him out when I break it down. He's doubled in size and seems to be doing fine back there, gets plenty of food, etc. The tank is on the bar in my kitchen so I can see him hopping around back there.

Lol! I'm sure he'll be happy when you get him out.

Had that happen a few times in a 30" tall tank also. Cleaner wrasse like to go for a ride. I also used a custom small net draining the water. Wound up putting extra mesh net around overflow until it got too big to fit there.
