Big shout out to @CJs Aquariums for spending the time to come up with the settings for the standing wave using the gyre pumps. CJ and I are both running 230's on our tanks, his is a 120 gallon 4x2x2 and I have the Reefer 250 36x20x21. Our schedule's are a little different and I obviously use less power with the smaller tank. Like many users we watch the @Bulk Reef Supply videos from start to finish and really enjoy the content and effort put into providing details! BRS went with modules to control their gyre pumps which is a viable option. Some of us prefer to use the tools given to us that can achieve the same goal! This is where CJ spent an hour or two coming up with the programming needed to mimic what BRS did in the video below!

I've attached a screen shot on how my gyre's are programmed. I spent the better part of an hour messing with my flow, it was easy for me to forget what setting I used on the last program. So I put it on paper for ease of programming and to share with the community.

Flow has always been very hard for me, what is to much and what is not enough? We are always taking others idea's and customizing them for our own setup. I certainly won't take credit for the work CJ did - my goal is to communicate this to community. There are always threads on flow in general and what settings are best. For me this was a game changer, my tank finally mimics what I've seen with my own eyes in the ocean. The movement in the tank looks more natural now and more importantly effective.

Start video at 15:15

CJ did a great job documenting how to program your gyre controller in advanced mode -

Great video!! I’m still struggling with not beating my torches up.
I have a 150 (5ft long x 18”wide) and have 2x250’s.

I think that is a struggle for all of us who keep a mixed reef. I try my best to shelter those corals and keep them out of indirect flow. With my 3' tank and running two 230's on it its easier said than done!

Thanks Pelphrey. I copied the same schedule but increased the power by 10% and pulsing at 0.8sec for my 4 feet tank. So far corals look happy.

Might add an extra profile to reverse the gyre for a couple minutes to remove any junk caught in the pump.

If you do run one or both in reverse let me know how that works for you! May be something I’m interested in if you get good results!

Thanks Pelphrey for pulling this information together! I'm totally going to try this out on my Reefer 250 with 2 Maxspect 230's this weekend! I watched that BRS episode when it first came out, and really wanted to see if that same programming could be replicated on the Maxspect controller. I'm psyched that someone has figured it out!

Have you noticed improved health and/or growth in your corals since making this flow change?

Thanks for sharing. I actually have a XF250 and was considering tossing it. 54" wide tank 30" tall and 30" deep. Never seems to hit the opposite side. May buy another one and see how that goes but would hate to spend another 150 or so on something I'm currently not happy with. You video showed me some good potential in mixed reef so will look at how I am using it.

Thanks again.

Edit: You can export and import right? Maybe host it so those who want to try and check it out. Would be nice if they let you export A, then edit in say excel or whatever editor of choice, then import / copy to B.

Edit 2: Also noticed yours are higher to the surface than mine. Is there a recommended height?

My tank has been going through some downs lately, not related to flow so I can’t say for certain!

I don’t know that you can export, the micro SD slot is for firmware updates only I believe. I have mine high so my kids can’t reach it. Which is why I really like the gyre pumps!

@pelphrey Thanks for clarifying the SD card - I thought it was also to use for a import and export. Bummer - seems like a important feature that could save everyone time and share. Learn something new. In fact, I've never updated my firmware - will look into that. Thanks again for your time - always good to see people do this sort of stuff!

Great video. I was just lamenting about being afraid of my controller. I may have to face that fear and tinker some more. I like the hour by hour detail you created. I was just glad to program a lower flow at night and stronger during the day.

Hey perhaps I’m tired but brs said they run pump a for 30 mins (for example) with pump b off, then slowly ramp up b while ramping down a and keep it repeating every 30 mins ?

Awesome! Thanks for that. I have the advanced controller. I will pay with it tonite :) In the op, he was using short pulses when running his pump. Why short pulses instead of constant flow ?

I don't know really - I am sorry. Maybe OP can answer. I only own one so use it in lunar cycle program. However, after watching the video and a few others I decided to order another standalone XF250 and run them together. It wasn't that bad of a price and I think I'll get better flow if I use something like the OP set up or BRS's - or even the lunar cycle with them in sync.

The pulses are done because the pumps alternate back and forth. On my 3’ tank the .06 pulse creates the wave.

I was hoping to replicate the gyre wave done by brs where they run it for 45 mins per side (im assuming it would have to do 1 hour per side). Problem is I have their advanced controller and not apex

Does anyone have a good schedule to use with one pump? I just bought the XF-230 for my Reefer 250. Right now I have it on LTC.

If you watch the second video in my original post CJ goes over how to program the controller in advanced mode. If you look at the picture I have below that video those are my settings. In advanced mode on the controller you can set up to 24 points I believe.

I've always like the pulse mode. You can do the same thing I am doing with one pump. If you watch the second video that CJ did he will show you how to program the advanced mode on the controller. You can set your points from there and have up to 24 (I believe) different flow patterns in a 24 hours period! Otherwise you can use a default mode like pulse!

+1 I'm adding an XF-230 to the rear overflow of my Reefer 170 and was planning on running in OGC at around 20-30%. Would love other suggestions.

Are you going to install the Gyre on the overflow? I think it would look slick there! Is the gyre the only pump you have for flow (except the return)? I ran random mode for awhile and really liked it!

Just wondering if anyone has figured out a way or already have a program that simulates a long pulse that alternates between A and B?

On my 40 breeder I was controlling my Jebao RW4's with my Reef Angel and it was pretty simple to select various patters like reef crest, tidal swell, etc. I found that my hammers really responded to an alternating long pulse at 30 second samples. I'm going to see if that is something I can replicate manually with the controller.

Edit: There is a default pulse built in it appears although seems a bit interesting to set up...
