AAAGGGHHH!!!! the beautiful frogspawn we got for my birthday is showing a little brown jelly on one of the heads. the tissue has receded up the skeleton all the way to the polyp! this is on one of the stalks with two adjoining heads! the other two heads are extending good but also show some tissue recession!

salinity is 1.025 (a little low), Zero testable nitrates, phosphates, PH 8.16, 8KH, temp is 80.8-79.6 per the controller. not testing any current on the multimeter.

it is not blasted by current but a nice random flow. it is a Wild caught colony so I can understand if it is not extending all the polyps.

Any ideas????? aaggghh!!! this was an expensive piece that was doing extremely well the whole time. not seeing anyone pick on it either... I did take it out and dip it in some oral rx pro...gently blew off all the brown tissue...

Sorry to hear this. I lost 20 heads to new coral (fresh cut frag from lfs) that caught a unknown sickness. I ended up losing frogspawn, lobo, and xenia. Sorry to hear this, but you might try fragging the remaing good heads. good luck.

nope. just the single cleaner shrimp. lighting is 250 wt Metal Halides. they run for two periods of 4 hours daily with 4x 54 wt actinics in between. coral is placed in the bottom 3rd of the water column.

any time I have odd issues like this the first steps I take are water change and carbon. Did you do any recent cleaning in the house? Any possible chance something foreign has been introduced to the tank? does everything else look ok?

Honestly, everything else looks fine. all the SPS are loud and proud. I have an Acan Enchinata that is doing extremely well. Zoanthids are also doing well. I dont run any carbon and do not subscribe to water changes. last was was done however about 6 weeks ago before the addition of this item. Before you point to the water change as an issue, I have done this very successfully for years with out water changes. I do run EcoBak and UV. also have a CaRx.

Troy, I think I have some carbon somewhere, just no reactor to put it in. Never been a big fan of it especially since the studies about it and HLLE. I have been running GFO. maybe time to change that out... ill do that tonight when I get home. Yea, the water is Super Crystal clear. now that I think of it, I did have a monti cap bleach up a week ago. just bleached around the rim for no reason....I tested everything then and last night and noting out of the ordinary....

Just make sure you rinse the carbon very well before putting it online and hlle should never be a issue.... You can put some in a bag in the sump in a high flow area for now something is better than nothing ya know...;) carbon will remove any impurities in the water Coloum making for a much healthier tank all around.....

I bought a beautiful abrotanoides sps frag 4 months ago did the revive dip etc when I got it & for several weeks it did really good colored up nice etc all of a sudden it started to RTN I had just read about h202 getting rid of brown algae (the nasty stuff with the bubbles can't think of the name) so I mixed 2C tank water & 1/4C h202 & dipped it for 10 minutes no aefw or redbugs came off it in the dip nor could I see any eggs etc rinsed it with tank water & put it back in the same place it just sat there for about a month doing nothing but no more RTNing today it is getting new branches & is doing really good I guess it killed some sorta bacteria don't know if it would work on LPS but if you get to the point where nothing else is working you might want to try the h202 dip

I would cut off the head with brown jelly so that it doesn't spread to the others or other lps.

I have read alot about what H2o2 is doing lately... I may try that if I see any more Brown tissue. I dipped it in Coral RX pro for 5 mins. gently washed it over with a turkey baster and blew the nasty tissue off. it looked good under the moonlights last night and also this morning. just that one head not coming out.

take as much of the brown jelly off and dip in iodine...I prefer Tropic Marin Pro-cure over other iodines. Lugol's work too. Should be a pee color, dip it for about 20-30 mins. I know most folks will say to place it in high flow...but it would just peel off the meat. Its best to low-mid flow indirect until it regains its health back.

Just an update. the two heads that were infected are not looking good. hardly any polyp extension. the other three heads do look good. tonight I will break it apart and put them on opposite ends of the tank to see if the damaged heads will recover. still not 100% sure of the true issue. I am thinking of the fact that my salinity got to 1.024 and maybe the GFO was a little old (maybe 60 days of use with low phosphates). I had an acro stn a few of its tips and a monti cap stn as well. Very strange happenings with the condition of the water. I am going to get some carbon tonight and get that in the media reactor for a little bit. Very frustrating as I cannot put my finger on the issue 100% and 90% of my corals look really good.
