In May I bought a hifin goby right after my aquarium had cycled. A few weeks later he disappeared. I thought he dead. Well last week I saw the ghost fish in the back of my AIO filter spay. I've tried many times to catch him and put him in the main part of the aquarium. He's too fast and has outsmarted me. Everyone I've talked to has said this is a difficult problem. Would a fish trap work ? I know where he is fine. I want him where I can see him. Any advice on how to catch him would be helpful and appreciated.

Have you tried sectioning parts of the area off? And maybe using a larger type of net, such kind you lay on the bottom then slowly raise?
It's already sectioned off. The problem is the filter area has small spaces that leads to another chamber. Sadly a bigger won't fit in the space.

You got kinda. Picture of the layout? Then I can get an idea of how it kinda looks and how to get him out.

Here's the layout of the chamber he's in. He's under a pump. If I move the pump he moves to another chamber.

What about I evening off, remove the one pump so he goes to the next chamber, then blocking the pathway so he can’t get back into that first chamber; then remove the pump in the second chamber that he is now in and net him then? Not sure this is helpful but how I see it in my head.

Both pumps appear to be in the same chamber.

I was going to say block everything off, get him into that small middle chamber. Block off the exits to it, bottom and top, and then have a rag or smth at the bottom of the chamber. When the fish is in there you just lift it straight up, it has nowhere to go and boom you have fish in middle of rag, and then dump fish back into main tank.
