Gigas Grow Out Thread

Since there are so many people buying these let's make a spot to document the growth!

Here is what we are starting with after being absent for 15-20 years from the hobby:

Here is mine. Delivered on 7/9/19. Attached in a couple hours (yay!). Lighting is 300-350 par orphek Atlantik v4 (80%w,100%b channels at peak). Although when it grows a bit more will transfer to sump.

And just to remind people, these guys get big. Really big. So please consider what you are going to do with them when get that large! It’s reported they are the toughest of the clams, so ideally a lot of them will make it to get that big.

I personally have a section of unfinished basement where I have a 150g rubber maid sump that is 58x39 and 24” high, with not much of anything in it so the clam could take up nearly that entire thing, but it would also be very easy for me to put in the 300g Rubbermaid at any time if I wanted, so I feel I do have this aspect covered. I heard the average growth is around 4” a year, so it would be a few years before even needing to put him down there. I do have some hippo clams and derasa down there now.

Because it can grow 3-4ft long and be several hundred pounds so 1st is utility, however I personally very much enjoy looking at live stock in the sump and for clams especially you can see the cool top down view which is better IMO than side through glass. I see it as a win win, good utility, top down view and will not dominate display.

My guy has them coming in this morning. He's going to handpick two for me. Hopefully mine will be here Saturday morning. Really cool to see the ones you all are getting. Funny how we "redirect" funds when "we" really want something.

Nice!! I am not sure if it's just the photos or what, but I wish mine was handpicked because the other pics look better than the one I got.

@hart24601 I think yours looks very healthy. They will change pretty quickly. These are still so young. I am not sure yet what mine will look like. These seem to be selling pretty quickly so I may have waited too long. He told me that he would put pics on his site today but nothing yet. Still early tho.

I know this is a thread dedicated to the new wave of T.gigas thare are coming out, but I wanted to share my old school T.giga that I purchased back in the day.

That is several years of growth. A large majority of that growth as in a 15 gallon nano lite by a 250 MH bulb (overkill much).

Unfortunately I lost this beauty when the tank that it was eventually moved to was over run my majanos. They got under its mantle and there wasn't anything that could be done. It was a beauty. In the end it was close to 12" across.

On a side note when I first purchased it, it cost me less than $20.

Yeah I was really bummed when that happened. I wouldn't mind getting another but at $199 that is really pushing it for a 2 to 3" clam. Granted I understand why the price is what it is.

LA isn't known for being the cheapest, partially because their price includes shipping and guarantee expenses. There's a good chance your LFS can get them for a better price.

I was talking about it yesterday with my LFS owner. He has been meaning to reach out to ORA to find out what the wholesale price is (if there is one) but hasn’t got a chance yet.

Got mine via my LFS. Their distributor would only allow them two. They held one for me & had sold the second before I even arrived. Placed it on a piece of shell in the sand, next to the other clams. All clams sitting below 250 watt 14K MHs. Tank is 30" high.

This T. Gigas appears to have the classic blue dots (I had to use glasses to see them, but they are there) so it should hopefully be very similar to my former Gigas that I sold almost 10 years ago. It was pushing 2 ft in length at that time. Here are some poor pictures of it, that I had to screenshot as couldn't upload. It was probably "only"around 15" at the time these pics were taken. If the new guy makes it & ends up half as nice, I'll be very happy.
