Just picked up this little guy yesterday. He's only about 1.5" total length. Sold as a Chocolate/Yellow mimic tang, but upon researching it appears it could be either that or a juvenile orange shoulder tang. Can anyone ID for sure? Otherwise we'll just take a poll. :)

Since the edit option is unavailable, how about what SPECIES is the tang. Darn typos!

I should add that I'm mostly just curious on people's opinions and more than likely nothing can be confirmed until it gets a bit older. But I thought it would be fun to see what everyone thought. I will continue to get more (hopefully better) pics if possible. Opinions will probably be ever changing as time goes on. :)

Don't search "orange shoulder tang" with yahoo images because you won't get anything close. Safe for work, just no orange shoulder tangs. I'm going with mimic tang for now.

I would guess mimic tang as well. Even juvenile orange shoulders show some of the shoulder markings from what I've seen.

I released him into the "ocean" today. He's really living it up. He tries to eat any little thing in the water he thinks might be food. He's a hoot to watch either way.

I love how this thread is an exact representation of my thought process (and researching habits) since I got him.

I am truly undecided, just like this thread!

Good picture evidence Sara! I did notice on the (bad) pics I took he has the same blue line on the anal fin as yours shows. This isn't necessarily evident just looking at him, but the camera seemed to catch those subtle highlights.

Now that I've let him into the main tank I don't know if I'll be able to get good pics, he never stops moving!

From a quick goggle search, I don't see any mimic tangs that have that blue stripe at the bottom of their bottom fin like orange shoulders do. That plus the fact that yours top fin doesn't go back as far as the mimic tang pics I've seen, makes me almost 100% sure it's an orange shoulder. BTW, I love my orange shoulder! He's a really cool fish and has grown from 3" to about 7-8" in 3 years, though he's still bright yellow with a bright orange shoulder! Not sure if he's ever going to change to light and dark grey.

I would say it would be slightly disappointing if he does turn out to be an orange shoulder since I only have a 4' 120g, but it will take him a long time to grow up either way and then I have incentive to get a bigger tank. :)
