Gulf Live Rock VS TBS

So i have 20lbs of gulf live rock that i got a week ago. I have it setup in a bare bottom 20 gallon with some koralias, heater, cheap led, and two fish to provide nutrients. I have a 3 month old 20 gallon reef that i started with dry rock. It already has lots if corals, and has been problem free. I started it with caribsea south sea base rock. Didnt even get any ugly stages. I want to replace a chunk or two of the dry rock in the reef tank with this live rock. I am nervous to introduce something and cause problems, when this tank has been problem free. I have been watching the live rock closely for a week, and havent really seen anything concerning. I have seen some small crabs(removed two, but theres more), an orange slug looking thing that crawled up the glass, some spaghetti worms that send out tons of little strings. I have seen little jets of waste get squirted out of holes from time to time. It also had several turkey wing clams, which i removed. It has various colors of sponge. Should i just closely inspect a chunk or two, give it a good strong swish in a bucket of SW, and add it? I was thinking of replacing the rock on the bottom that the favia coral is leaning on, and the top right rock with the torch. Id love to add the additional strains of coralline that the rock has.

I bought TBS when I started my system, and have been pleased with it. It's possible that other vendors are better or cheaper, but I will stick with what has worked.

So while I don't think I have the amount of experience to tell you to pick TBS over another vendor, I can tell you that if you buy TBS, you will most likely be satisfied with your purchase.

I wanted to give my review of both companies. This is my first time posting to this forum. I do not normally comment on any forums, but I felt the need to speak up.

I origionally ordered 45 lbs of LS from TBS. I payed for the REQUIRED overnight shipping. After waiting about a 3 weeks for the order to be shipped (they only ship on certain days), I was so excited to receive my shipment. The day of arival, I get an email stating UPS has my order held up in a facility, and that I would be getting my order the next day. Not to worry, a UPS claim would be put in on my behalf (sweet) - i understand things happen, no biggie. The next day, when expecting my order, I am like a kid on christmas morning. I get an email stating the product has arrived, go to the front door, and see this tiny box, soaking wet. UH OH. My first thought is, "this is it? This does not look like 45 lbs," and, "why is the box soaking wet?"

I take the tiny package to my floor scale and not to my suprise, the scale doesnt even register the weight of the package. Im not terribly upset at this point, because as a business owner myself, I trust the merchant will make it right. I reach out to the merchant, whom kindly responds to my email (after hours), and insists that they shipped the correct amount of product, and to weigh it myself if I do not believe them, and that all product is shipped at a flat rate under 50lbs. This is the first time I get upset, because ive never not given my customers the benefit of the doubt. After some back and forth, It is time to get on the phone and stop the email nonsense.

On the phone, the polite lady proceeded to explain that the sand is shipped in 15 lb increments and that the $58 shipping fee is actually per box, not per 50lbs. When I asked her to explain the discrepency between what she just said and her email, I was given an excuse I dont wish to mention. From that point on I was given probably 5 different excuses as to how this mistake happened. To be honest, I dont really care about the excuses, I just want a solution. While she did offer solutions, I was not happy with what was being offered, (air freight the rest 1.5 hrs away for free, split the difference in a UPS delivery, or refund what i did not receive) because had I known the shipping was going to be 3x what was represented on the website, I would not have ordered ANY of it.

After sleeeping on it, the next day I reached out to Gulf Live Rock. This guy is so professional on the phone. He tells me he is not sure how much he has left, and that he had a large order about to go out, but will make an exception and take out 25lbs of that order in order to help me out. This was a thursday. He said he could ship it by Monday, and that there is no need to overnight sand as it is very hardy, and too expensive. I just received it, and let me tell you the quality in the two products are night and day different. There is zero die off smell, the box and packaging is perfect. I cannot beleive that this stuff is being harvested from such a short distance away. The stuff from TBS has virtually zero corline algae on it. The stuff from GLR is LOADED with it, along with rock rubble covered in it. In addition, I am already see life that I dont see on the TBS stuff.

Look at the difference for yourself

To me the quality of the product plus the customer service makes @Gulf Live Rock my new vendor of choice.
@bmizell Yep, we are working through a few glitches on the new website and UPS "misplaced" all the boxes in your group for 26 hours. Glad you hooked up with GLR and best wishes.

Gulf live rocks rock is very nice. I now have 40 lbs of it in an isolation tank. Very little die off when overnighted, and shipped with damp towels draped over it. Lots of purple and maroon coralline. No terrible pests as far as i have seen.

Gulf live rock I have always used its the BEST in MY OPINION! VERY COLORFUL AND NEVER DISAPPOINTED, I bought six boxes at different times, and was very pleased.
Ya i was amazed at the difference in "Life" between the two vendors. They are supposedly pretty close to each other in the gulf. I cannot explain why the stuff from GLR was so much more lively/covered in coraline.

Either option will still allow your new tank to start of light years ahead of bagged sand off the store shelf imo. Who knows what school playground they dig that stuff up from...

@Gulf Live Rock Is this one of the illegal gulf corals that you can only get if its attached to live rock?

All wild coral collection is illegal in USA

Maricultured coral is farmed on leases purchased from the state with strict permitting requirements. limestone is mined from rock quarries inland then railed to the coast and placed on bottom.

A Few times a day, i see a quick squirt of waste get shot out of holes in the rock. What is doing that?

I just put in an order with Gulf. I already had a order in with Tampa bay. Gulf's website is so much easier to get information from. They leave no question when to expect your shipment, when it will ship to you area, and tell you what exactly will happen when you get notice of shipment. That was lovely. I can't wait to see how they stack up. Whoever ends up being the better rock, I think I am going to bite the bullet and order enough for the display. I'm so sick of beating one algae just for another to pop up, and rinse and repeat.

I love may rock from Live Gulf Rock. I put the new rock in a container to check for any bad critters, rinse with saltwater. As of now my rock is growing the macro and no bad algae. A lot of purple too. I order the premium rock. Got some really good gorgonians from LGR. Best of luck. I do think live rock is the best way to start a reef.

I'm just going to toss it in the sump. If I ever do get rock for the display I will take your suggestion.

You local says South Georgia. Could always take your avatar car and take a road trip :) I'm in California and seriously considering making one to Key West, Florida and stopping by to pick some TBS rock on the way back. Of course the route to will have all the fun stops but the way back is a tag team effort or mini cannon ball run to get the rock home.

I have an open order from TBS that they are waiting on me. They are great to talk to and so far gave me a great recommendation on a tank builder for an upgrade I'm working on. This past week we talked about wetsuits as I was getting ready to do some cold water diving in Monterey, Ca. Previous owner I used to talk about Men's Health.

TL; DR - TBS is a great small business to support. You could always buy from both.
This is what i am going to do. I've been researching both vendors, and I will find something from both of them. I have a nano tank, tho, so I'm going to ask that they "try" to remove all the hitchhikers that would not be so good for a tiny tank.

Bringing this thread back, but not for a debate over which company is better. My question to those who have purchased live sand from either or both is how fine is the grain? Is it ok for sand sifting fish??

And how do people feel mixing some of this truly live sand with Special Grade Arag-Alive?
