No oil leaking during test of BP's new cap - Disaster in the Gulf - msnbc.com

HOUSTON — For the first time since the Gulf oil spill disaster started on April 20, the entire flow of oil was being contained Thursday as part of BP's pressure testing of a new cap, BP and federal officials said.

If the cap holds, the idea is to keep it on — and the flow checked — until a relief well can plug the blownout well in August.

If the cap does not hold, BP has added to its siphoning capacity and expects to be able to siphon up most if not all of the oil starting next week.

BP had slowly dialed down the flow as part of the pressure test. Engineers are now monitoring the pressure to see if the busted well holds.

BP Vice President Kent Wells said that oil stopped flowing into the water at 3:25 p.m. ET.

The federal Joint Information Center confirmed that the flow had stopped.

Thank God it stopped! I had a great idea to fix it but they didn't use it. I told them to just buy a HUGE wedding band and to put that around it and it should stop putting out...........

Speaking for the Gulf Coast residents....Awesome. It is surely about time.....Now to pick up the millions of gallons strewn all over the Gulf and the shoreline...

So sad. I used to visit Galveston and see family in New Orleans when I was a kid. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction for those who were directly impacted. There's still the cleanup and a lot of job recovery left to do. Still not out of the woods, yet.

we are ruined here in Louisiana.. There are soo many people that depend on the gulf for a living. We cant even go fishing in our favorite spots anymore.
Seafood is almost non-existent or incredibly pricey.. It is really sad and depressing.
Yes Im glad they finally fixed the leak but imo alot too late..

Hahahahahahah!

I have been keeping up with the leak since early this morning.... So far so good!! Hopefully they can now focus on skimming the waters surface to avoid more contamination!
Either way, this is great news!!
